What's The Song From The GTA 6 Trailer?

The first trailer for "Grand Theft Auto 6" has finally been released, and there's a ton of information to sift through in the 91-second video. But what about the song that's playing during the trailer? As expected, the new trailer features a banging soundtrack, but the particular song choice might hold more significance than one might think. Let's take a look at this track, how it was used, and the possible deeper meaning behind it.

The song featured in the trailer is none other Tom Petty's "Love is A Long Road," which was originally included on his album "Full Moon Fever." This isn't the first time Tom Petty has been featured in a "Grand Theft Auto" title, however. His song "Runnin' Down A Dream" (from the same album) was previously featured on the classic rock station in "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas." The energetic track opens with a building guitar riff, then only builds from there with rocking drums and a soaring chorus.

The song also provides a solid introduction to 3D era's first female "GTA" protagonist, Lucia, as well as a great backdrop to the reveal of Vice City's strip and skyline. Towards the end, as everything fades out to the title reveal, the song hits us once more with the line "It's a long, long road," right before revealing the game's 2025 release year. The editors behind this trailer deserve massive kudos, as the song perfectly ties into a few important aspects of the trailer.

It's a long, long road...

Rockstar is typically pretty thoughtful in the ways in which it deploys music in "Grand Theft Auto" trailers, and the use of Tom Petty's "Love Is A Long Road" seems highly appropriate for a few reasons. The most glaringly obvious ones are that the wait for this trailer has been a long road — and with a release date occurring sometime in 2025, we still have a long, long road to go before we get our hands on it. However, the track could have a much deeper meaning in how it relates to our two leads, Lucia and her male partner (identified in previous leaks as Jason). The footage in the trailer suggests that these two are a devoted pair, likely romantically involved and most certainly partners in crime — a clear homage to Bonnie and Clyde.

The opening lyrics of the track are as follows: "There was a girl I knew/She said she cared about me/She tried to make my world/The way she thought it should be." Combined with the trailer's focus on Lucia, these lyrics could suggest that the song is from Jason's perspective in the case of the trailer, referring directly to his feelings about her. This love for Lucia could be what drags Jason into a life of a crime. These characters (and the player) could be about to embark on a long, long road together. We'll have to see where that road leads in 2025.
