Xbox One's Free Play Days Event Includes Borderlands: HC, WWE 2K19

Now that we know Borderlands 3 is on its way this fall, why not dive into a few of the earlier entries in the series? If you're on Xbox One, you'll be able to do that this weekend, thanks to what Microsoft calls Free Play Days.

Starting today and lasting until midnight on Sunday, you can download Borderlands: The Handsome Collection – which includes remastered versions of Borderlands 2 as well as Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel — and play both games absolutely free. Even better: if you own an Xbox One X, you'll be playing the absolute best-looking takes on these titles, thanks to a recent patch that added Ultra HD support.

Will you be able to cheat the system, so to speak, and complete both games without having to buy them? It's highly unlikely. According to How Long to Beat, the Borderlands 2 campaign clocks in at around 30-and-a-half hours, while The Pre-Sequel's story will take you roughly 18 hours to finish. That is a lot of game time, and while it's technically possible, we wouldn't recommend it.

Also coming to Free Play Days is WWE 2K19, the latest in 2K Games' annualized wrestling franchise. These are fan-favorite simulations that contain enormous rosters and all sorts of modes for those who like their wrestling fake. And while we don't adore them quite as much as we did Yukes' arcade-style games (the SmackDown! series) or the-studio-formerly-known-as-AKI's efforts (WWF No Mercy), they're still a good time if you have some friends around.

Lastly, Dead by Daylight comes to Free Play Days, giving you a chance to become the hunter or the hunted in a grisly horror game that pits one killer against a team of scared-to-death survivors. As the killer, it's your mission to prevent any survivors from escaping. And as a survivor — well, you probably get it — the object is to escape with your life. We've heard some not-so-great things about bugs and frame rate issues in the past for this one, though it's entirely possible the game is in a much better place by now. It's free to play for the weekend, so if you're on the fence about putting your money down on it, now's the time to kick its tires.

Free Play Days wraps up on Sunday night at 11:59 p.m. PT, so if any of the above games pique your curiosity, you have until then to download them on your Xbox One and fire them up at no cost.
