Stage Builder Could Be On The Way For Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate offers quite a bit of customization, but the game's been missing something rather large: Stage Builder. Fortunately, it appears that feature could soon come to the game, as evidenced by a recent commercial that shows Stage Builder in one of Smash Ultimate's menus.
Eurogamer reports that the ad, which was published yesterday on YouTube, very briefly displays "Stage Builder" as a menu option on a Nintendo Switch running Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. We checked and, sure enough, it does. We also booted up Smash ourselves and determined that the Stage Builder option shown in the ad is on the "Games & More" screen. Currently, that screen only shows "Mii Fighters" and "amiibo" on the bottom row. Should Stage Builder arrive sometime soon, it seems those other options would shrink in size to make room.
Super Smash Bros. fans will undoubtedly celebrate the addition of this feature, which has been around since Brawl on the Wii. As for when we could see Stage Builder come to the game, the safe bet is sometime this spring when the Version 3.0 update arrives. That's the update, by the way, that could also bring Persona 5's Joker to the roster via DLC.
Now, there's a bit of debate about whether Nintendo accidentally revealed Stage Builder or whether the mode was shown intentionally. If there is one thing Nintendo cares about more than anything else, it's presentation. This is the company that now eschews live shows in favor of highly produced videos, so it seems highly unlikely Nintendo would've just let this slip by accidentally. You can count us as part of Team They-Definitely-Did-It-On-Purpose.
Should we get that rumored Nintendo Direct tomorrow or sometime in the near future, there's a chance we could see Stage Builder announced in an official capacity there. Until then, we'll be on the lookout for any other news regarding Smash Ultimate's potential new mode.
