Frozenbyte Unveils Starbase, A Fully Destructible Space MMO

Finnish-based Frozenbyte has announced Starbase, their upcoming space MMO.

According to the official description, Starbase is a "hybrid voxel/vertex-based" game that features a "fully destructible and infinitely expanding universe." It focuses on constructing spaceships and stations, a process supported by a robust economy and combat-system. Players can also explore the universe alone or with friends via a sandbox mode.

Today's trailer, which includes pre-alpha gameplay footage, provides a glimpse of the size and variety Starbase offers. "The scale and depth of the simulation in all aspects of the game gives players the ultimate freedom to exploit their innovativeness and creativity — the building blocks of success in Starbase," promises Frozenbyte. "From constructing single spaceships with durable outer platings to creating massive automated factories and designing electricity and data networks, the players are free to do it their own way."

Focusing on immersion, Starbase includes several details designed to provide a more realistic experience. Structural and elemental durability simulations make construction and exploration efforts more challenging. Even small ships incorporate thousands of parts and the smallest building unit in the game is a single bolt. With so many working pieces, Starbase rewards creativity and attention-to-detail.

Frozenbyte has been working on Starbase in secret for half a decade. The game uses the indie developer's custom-built internal game engine, specially designed to meet the needs of the MMO. "The engine's architecture is designed to handle all the quirks of simulation, damage, building, player amounts and the ever-growing universe to match the challenges the ambitious vision of the game can pose," says the official website. "Similarly, all features of the game have been developed with the infinite scale and the creative freedom of the players in mind."

Starbase enters Steam Early Access later this year. Add the game to your wishlist to receive a notification once the Early Access starts. You can also check out the Starbase Discord server here.
