Marvel's Avengers Reveals New Look For Thor

Though many were excited about the concept behind Marvel's Avengers, the first look at the game's main characters dampened that enthusiasm. A vocal sub-group criticized the appearances of the heroes, especially their facial features and hair. It seems that developer Crystal Dynamics has taken this criticism to heart, unveiling a new look for Thor.

Square Enix has shared a new video featuring Thor and his abilities via the Marvel's Avengers Twitter page. The showcase reveals Thor's new design aesthetic, complete with a stylish up-do that makes him appear younger and less, well, washed up than his previous shaggy, shoulder-length locks. With his hair now arranged into a ponytail, Thor more closely resembles Chris Hemsworth's look in the Avengers: Endgame film, though video game Thor's hair is cropped shorter. Long hair is notoriously difficult to animate; less length is also easier to fit under the cosmetic helmets that you'll be able to choose from once the title launches.

When the criticism first started pouring in following the Marvel's Avengers reveal, Crystal Dynamics stated that they did not plan to make any alterations to their unique interpretation of the characters. Despite this, a new look for Black Widow rolled out in July during her own showcase video, including tweaks to her face and hair. The improvements for both characters have already met with approval from Avengers fans.

It's unclear whether Crystal Dynamics has more changes in store for the other team members. With the launch several months away, they have plenty of time to refine before releasing the main product. By choosing characters and a subject matter so dear to the hearts of many, especially so soon after the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, the developer was bound to encounter some blow back. Whether they can remain true to their vision for Marvel's Avengers while delivering a game that satisfies the fandom remains to be seen.

Marvel's Avengers releases for PC, Google Stadia, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 15, 2020.
