The Sonic Movie Just Got A Theme Song And Music Video

We're less than a month away from the release of Sonic the Hedgehog in theaters, and it seems the marketing campaign for the film has officially kicked into high gear. Today saw the release of the movie's theme song, along with an accompanying music video. And you know what? Both are serviceable.

Let's start with the track itself. "Speed Me Up" features rappers Wiz Khalifa, Lil Yachty, Ty Dolla $ign and Sueco the Child. If you listen to popular music at all, you've likely heard of three of those people. The fourth you probably aren't familiar with is Sueco the Child, who found fame thanks to TikTok, quickly released an album, and had Pitchfork say he's "been minorly famous for only a few months, but he already sounds washed up."

The hook is surprisingly catchy. The verses from Wiz, Lil Yachty and Ty Dolla $ign are fine. Sueco's is so short it barely registers.

As for the video itself? There's a whole lot of throwback retro action happening, with all of the rappers becoming pixelated video game characters in order to enter Sonic's world. There is running. There are gold rings. There are rappers entering the Chaos Emerald stages in trucks for some reason. And of course, there is gaming on the couch. Which leads us to our biggest nitpick of the video.

Why in the fresh hell is Wiz Khalifa blowing on a Sega Genesis cartridge? Who has ever done that?

You can check out the video for yourself at the top of this post. How you feel about both the video and the song, of course, will come down to personal opinion. But unlike the movie design of Sonic, this is likely not going back to the drawing board. So if you're excited for the film and you can plan on seeing it in theaters when it releases Feb. 14, be prepared to hear this tune quite a bit.
