Upcoming Video Game Movies We Can't Wait To See In 2027
As more and more television and film adaptations of games entertain audiences, the tragic history of video game movies feels like a thing of the past. Some of the biggest movies in recent years have been based on gaming properties and Hollywood producers continue to look to the medium for their next blockbuster franchises.
Several big video game movies hit theaters in 2026, and 2027 is already shaping up to be a major year for cinematic gaming adaptations thanks to some highly anticipated sequels and some great properties that are being adapted for the big screen for the first time. From family-friendly fare to more intense action movies, video game movies are poised to thrive in cinemas throughout 2027.
Though there's no guarantee that these films will live up to the source material, we're cautiously optimistic that they'll stick the landing. As always, planned release dates are subject to change at the discretion of the studios involved, but these video game flicks are all currently set for 2027, and we can't wait to see them.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (March 19)
The live-action "Sonic the Hedgehog" movies that began in 2020 are among the best video game movies of all time. The mid and post-credit scenes for 2024's "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" teased a sequel, including a role for Sonic's fan-favorite ally Amy Rose. "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" was officially confirmed as being in development in December 2024, ahead of its predecessor's wide theatrical release. The following month, a planned release date of March 19, 2027 was announced for the Sega sequel.
While details about the upcoming sequel are still being kept tightly under wraps, "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" has signed on Kristen Bell to voice Amy Rose. Jeff Fowler, who helmed the prior three live-action movies and worked on the cutscenes for the 2005 video game "Shadow the Hedgehog," will return to direct. Amy Rose was introduced to the Sonic the Hedgehog timeline in the 1993 video game "Sonic CD," helping Sonic on a time-traveling adventure to prevent a dystopian future. Amy also maintains a longstanding unrequited romantic interest in Sonic, adding a humorous element to their dynamic that "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" will hopefully lean into.
The Legend of Zelda (May 7)
Arguably the most anticipated video game adaptation coming in 2027, or at least the one with the highest bar of expectation, is "The Legend of Zelda." Development on the live-action movie was officially announced in November 2023. "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" helmer Wes Ball signed on to direct, with franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto and longtime "Spider-Man" producer Avi Arad both producing the project. Principal photography began in November 2025 and is expected to last until April 2026, with the movie's release date set for May 7, 2027.
English actors Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason will star as Link and Princess Zelda, respectively. Nintendo and Sony have hinted that the adaptation will retell the classic tale of Link and Zelda moving to stop the evil Ganon from obtaining the sacred relic known as the Triforce, an important artifact in the mythology of the "Zelda" series. That plot description can be applied to any number of existing "Zelda" games rather than a single title the movie may adapt directly. Either way, the film is sure to be packed with things only true "Zelda" fans will understand, given the breadth of the source material.
Untitled A Minecraft Movie sequel (July 23)
For many years, fans believed that we would never get a "Minecraft" movie, with a proposed big screen adaptation languishing in development hell. The project finally came together in 2025 and became a huge hit, earning close to $1 billion at the worldwide box office. In the wake of this commercial success, a currently untitled sequel to "A Minecraft Movie" was formally announced in October 2025. Filmmaker Jared Hess, who helmed the 2025 movie, will return to direct and co-write the sequel, along with returning screenwriter Chris Galletta. The film has received a July 23, 2027 release date though little is currently known about the sequel's plot.
The first "Minecraft" movie has franchise protagonist Steve (Jack Black) get teleported into the cubic fantasy Overworld after creating a portal to this strange reality. Years later, a group of misfits in a small town in Idaho are accidentally transported into Overworld, including video game store owner Garrett Garrison (Jason Momoa). With the 2025 movie revolving around the ensemble defeating the evil warlord Malgosha (voiced by New Zealand actress Rachel House, a regular Taika Waititi collaborator), the sequel has plenty of exciting directions to take the story next.
Helldivers (November 10)
2027 is shaping up to be a big year for video game movie adaptations starring Jason Momoa. In the wake of the successful launch of the third person squad-based shooter game "Helldivers 2" in 2024, a movie adaptation was announced in January 2025. The following December, "Fast & Furious" filmmaker Justin Lin signed on as the project's director, with "It" screenwriter Gary Dauberman penning the screenplay. Momoa's participation as the adaptation's star was confirmed in February 2026, as was the movie's planned November 10, 2027 release date.
The game's story is set in the 22nd century after humanity has begun to spread its presence on planets across the cosmos. Players control shock troopers who drop from orbit onto planets with various hostile forces: "Helldivers 2" features a monstrous insectoid species called Terminids as one of the main antagonists. DLC updates continue the game's story as the Federation of Super Earth faces new threats to their forced democratization of the universe. It'll be interesting to see how a movie reimagines this online game experience into a coherent, character-driven narrative.
