There's Only One Console You'll Want To Own For Grand Theft Auto 6

Easily one of the most anticipated video games of 2026, Rockstar's "Grand Theft Auto VI" finally appears poised to receive a wide release in November. Marking a return to the classic franchise location of Vice City and its surrounding areas, the story focuses on criminal couple Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos as its new protagonists. The game is the first mainline title in the series in 13 years, with Rockstar delaying the launch of "GTA 6" for years before settling on its current release date. But even with "Grand Theft Auto VI" cruising for a solid release window, there are still caveats around it, including the optimal platforms to play it on.

For starters, at the time of this writing, there has been no official word from Rockstar Games about "Grand Theft Auto VI" coming to PC. Instead, the only confirmed platforms so far are the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X|S. This console-first strategy keeps in line with Rockstar tradition, with "Grand Theft Auto V" released for PC two years after consoles and "Red Dead Redemption 2" the year following consoles. This also raises the question of which home platform is the most ideal for playing "Grand Theft Auto VI" upon its launch this November.

In this case, there is a clear winner when it comes to technical specifications, with Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro standing as the superior console for the job.

Why Grand Theft Auto 6 works best on the PlayStation 5 Pro

Ever since its release in 2024, the PlayStation 5 Pro has featured a growing line of titles optimized for performance on its impressive hardware. This includes "Final Fantasy VII Rebirth," "Assassin's Creed Shadows," and this year's own PS5 exclusive release "Saros." Rumors from an alleged recent leak indicate that "Grand Theft Auto VI" will similarly feature an enhanced presentation on the PS5 Pro. If true, this places the game's performance on the console not only above other versions of the PS5 but both of Microsoft's current generation of Xbox consoles.

To further support the idea that the PlayStation 5 version of "Grand Theft Auto VI" will be optimized, the game's recent trailers feature gameplay footage captured on the PS5 itself. The disclaimer comes at the end of a trailer released last year, alluding to Rockstar Games' confidence in the Sony hardware. Looking at the specs, the PS5 Pro boasts a GPU that runs 45% faster than base PS5s, improved ray tracing, and image upscaling through the console's signature PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Simply put, the PlayStation 5 Pro is going to handle the technical rigors of running "Grand Theft Auto VI" better than any other console currently on the market.

If there was ever a single game to put holdouts from purchasing a PlayStation 5 Pro, "Grand Theft Auto VI" will convince them to make the upgrade.
