GTA 6's Extended Look Is Missing One Critical Gameplay Feature Fans Love
"Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" has given gamers their first official glimpse of "GTA 6" gameplay. The Netflix special, which essentially amounted to 26 minutes of pure gameplay with a few cut scenes interspersed, confirmed that Rockstar Games' upcoming entry in the "GTA" franchise will include a whole host of new features and a much more immersive and realistic setting than any game ever created. But one thing conspicuously absent from the presentation was first person view.
This feature has been part of the series since 2001's "Grand Theft Auto 3," where it was used in a very limited capacity. In 2014, however, Rockstar added a fully-fledged first person view feature to both "GTA 5" and "GTA Online." This came with multiple additions including a first person cover system, a redesigned targeting system and control scheme, thousands of new animations, and the ability to drive vehicles from a cockpit perspective. Rockstar also made it instantly accessible via a single button press, allowing players to easily switch between perspectives.
The addition of this newly redesigned viewpoint didn't replace the games' traditional third person view. But it did become a notable aspect of "GTA 5" on which many players relied when racing or during certain shootouts. Rockstar even released an official trailer touting the upgraded first person view as a major addition to "GTA 5." As such, the expectation was that "GTA 6" would come with an improved first person feature. Unfortunately, "An Extended Look" didn't confirm whether that would be the case or not.
Even the leaks haven't confirmed whether GTA 6 will feature first person view
When Rockstar introduced its enhanced first person view for "GTA 5" and "GTA Online," it was a significant upgrade that, alongside the aforementioned features, added more subtle elements such as gauges when driving using the cockpit view and enhanced interior textures. Clearly, then, the developer took the feature seriously, which meant fans were almost certain they would get an enhanced version of first person view in "GTA 6."
Thus far there's been no official word on whether that will be the case, and "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" didn't provide any insight whatsoever in that regard. We did get much more information about protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, who are seen working their way up from drug deals to working security for a high-profile entrepreneur. We also saw a lot more of the newly redesigned Vice City, much of which was also revealed in the recent "GTA 6" leaks from the group known as Cyberleek. For whatever reason, however, first person view wasn't addressed in the Netflix special or the leaks.
It's not just "GTA" that has made use of first person. Many Rockstar adherents are used to getting a direct view of the action in "Red Dead Redemption 2," which was playable in both third and first person. It's unlikely Rockstar has dropped the feature altogether for "GTA 6" but it is strange that we've had no word on its inclusion, either in an official capacity or in any leaks. Let's hope that's remedied soon.
