Could Hurricanes Temporarily Transform GTA 6's Map? Reddit's Best Weather Theory Explained
It's taken 13 years for "Grand Theft Auto 6" to arrive, and while it seems impossible for it to live up to fan expectations after so long, everything we've heard about the game suggests Rockstar Games has managed to do just that. The game sounds thoroughly detailed, from the new "GTA 6" wanted system which now takes into account whether players were captured on CCTV, to the myriad side activities, which include everything from sunbathing to cave diving. Then there's the weather system in "GTA 6," which, as well as being realistic, sounds as though it might have a significant impact on the game map.
In September, Rockstar confirmed via Game Informer that "GTA 6" will feature all-new weather events, including hurricanes and tropical storms. At the time, vice president of art for lighting and rendering at Rockstar, Owen Shepherd, explained how the new system will bring "heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics, and a lot of rain" to the game's map. He also confirmed that storms will actually have an effect, with water "gushing off roof edges and lampposts," as well as "thunder rumbles" and "flashes of lightning" that "light up the clouds dramatically." But perhaps the most interesting aspect of Shepherd's comments was the promise of a "persistent" system that can alter the in-game environment, with rain storms leaving puddles behind etc.
Naturally, the promise of hurricanes and weather that leaves lasting effects on the map prompted many to consider how the more extreme events might result in drastic changes to the environment. Fans on Reddit have speculated about how this might work, and the possibilities are exciting.
Redditors are speculating about whether hurricanes will occur dynamically in GTA 6
Redditors have reacted to Rockstar Games' confirmation of hurricanes in "Grand Theft Auto 6" by theorizing about how weather events might change the map. If rain leaves puddles behind, could a storm cause flooding or road closures? It's fascinating to think about, especially as these would have a significant impact on players' experience.
Rockstar has yet to confirm whether hurricanes will be limited to story missions, but one Redditor has shared their theory that these extreme weather events will, in fact, occur dynamically. The user refers to Owen Shepherd's comments as "mak[ing hurricanes] seem like an open world event that you actually live in," adding, "I think that if it is a story event, I don't think Rockstar would choose to give out this type of information that can ruin a big surprise in the story." One reply suggests that hurricanes may occur "at random" but that there will also be "a big one" that will occur as part of a story mission.
A similar theory was also proposed by another Reddit user, who suggested that "GTA 6" will feature a mission involving a major hurricane that will "cause a lot of visible wreckage and physical damage to a lot of infrastructure." Throughout the "GTA" series there have been several missions that result in permanent physical changes to the in-game environment. One of the worst "GTA" missions of all time, "Bomb Da Base: Act II," for example, ended with a large freighter sinking and disappearing for good.
The point is: Rockstar has included missions that permanently alter the map before. Hurricanes that cause widespread flooding, however, would be on a whole new level.
Fans are theorizing about how much weather will affect the GTA 6 map
Rockstar Games has yet to clarify how deeply the "persistent" aspect of the weather system will affect the "Grand Theft Auto 6" map. Meanwhile, fans are left to speculate, and they do. "Will smaller buildings get destroyed to some degree?" asks one Redditor. "Will trees get ripped out if they are small enough? If everything in the streets get[s] thrown around, trash and leaves everywhere, will it just de-spawn after you go away?" These are interesting questions, as they directly relate to how players' experiences could be affected — and not only as a result of property damage or flooding.
If Rockstar has developed a complex enough system, perhaps the Leonida authorities will prepare for a hurricane's arrival with sandbags and detours. Will players be required to board up their own properties? Store their cars somewhere specific? Would robberies become easier during and after an extreme weather event? Would side activities such as dirt biking suddenly become harder ? Given everything Rockstar has confirmed about "GTA 6" thus far, it wouldn't be surprising if some of this was in fact the case.
Some Reddit users have pointed to a moment in the second "GTA 6" trailer wherein protagonist Jason Duval is seen on his roof telling Brian Heder he's "just fixing some leaks." While the moment in question clearly happens during a cutscene, it could be that the leaks are the result of a prior hurricane that damaged Jason's home. Whatever the case, Rockstar has developed a weather system that has more of an impact on the map than any other game. It remains to be seen just how significant that impact is, but we'll find out for sure when "GTA 6" finally drops on November 19, 2026.
