Great News Might Be On The Way For Elder Scrolls Fans

The Elder Scrolls is one of the largest RPG franchises in gaming history and has enjoyed massive commercial success. Developer Bethesda Softworks has been riding high since it released The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim back in 2011, a title that sold 30 million copies worldwide within five years of launch. While information regarding the highly-anticipated follow-up, The Elder Scrolls 6, remains scarce, fans of the franchise may soon have another major reason to rejoice.

According to a recent rumor from industry insider Daniel Richtman (via We Got This Covered), The Elder Scrolls may be the next video game series to get the Netflix treatment. A franchise as popular as The Elder Scrolls comes with a built-in fanbase, meaning it could be just as big as The Witcher, which received its own Netflix adaptation and was renewed for a second season.

The Elder Scrolls is set in a large and expansive world and has decades of history to draw on. A TV show could prove the ideal medium for bringing that rich detail to life. Bethesda is also no stranger to the world of television. Amazon announced plans to adapt Fallout for its streaming service earlier in 2020, with Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy tapped to serve as executive producers. Of course, it's important to keep in mind that Bethesda has not confirmed that The Elder Scrolls is being turned into a television adaptation. Netflix and Amazon are streaming competitors, so the rumor may be nothing more than that — a rumor.

Netflix has a history of molding video game series into original TV shows. Castlevania's third season dropped back in March, and The Witcher already started filming its second season. It is safe to say that a new offering based on an iconic game like The Elder Scrolls wouldn't be out of Netflix's wheelhouse. Anything is possible — let's just hope they don't take an arrow to the knee.

Can't wait for your next The Elder Scrolls fix? The Elder Scrolls Online is still going strong with frequent content updates. Bethesda announced the next expansion, Gates of Oblivion, during the 2020 Game Awards. Fans can tune in for the Global Reveal Event via twitch.tv/Bethesda on Jan. 21 at 5 p.m. ET to learn more about the future of ESO, including the new Chapter, DLCs, and upcoming storyline.
