This Classic Star Wars Game Just Got Resurrected On PlayStation And Switch

There have been quite a few Star Wars games released, both good and bad. Released in 2005, Star Wars: Republic Commando is still known as one of the best Star Wars games. In Star Wars: Republic Commando, the player is able to control an elite squad of clone troopers. On Feb 24., Aspyr Media uploaded a trailer for Star Wars: Republic Commando to YouTube, announcing that the classic Star Wars title would soon be coming to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

Throughout Star Wars: Republic Commando the player is able to command an NPC squad, which follows orders and works as a team. In the single-player version, the player commands a squad of four. In the multiplayer mode, the player can play with up to 16 other players.  On Twitter, Aspyr Media clarified that the re-released version of the game on PS4 and Switch would include only the single-player experience from the release, not the multiplayer experience currently available on Steam. Those of you hoping to recreate those all-out battles from the original Xbox era will unfortunately be out of luck.

Star Wars: Republic Commando is often thought of as a cult classic, with a 78 on Metacritic. Despite this, fans have been skeptical about ever seeing a remake. Initially, the game was planned to have a sequel; either Imperial Commando or Rebel Commando. But after Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, many previously planned projects were canceled — especially after Disney declared much of the Star Wars extended universe non-canon.

Reactions to the announcement, however, have been mixed. Some players on Twitter were less than enthused that the re-release would not include Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S. Others on Reddit totally changed the subject, lamenting the lack of a Knights of the Old Republic re-release. Still, while this isn't a remake, this new port of the game may be enough for Star Wars: Republic Commando to get some new fans — and to be introduced to an entirely new generation.

Interestingly, users on Twitter had already broken the news about Star Wars: Republic Commando two weeks before Aspyr Media uploaded its trailer. Information about the Switch version was reportedly uploaded to Nintendo's servers a little early. There could be more Star Wars news on the way, too — a user on r/GamingLeaksandRumors on Reddit claims that the Knights of the Old Republic games will be coming to the Nintendo Switch "and other consoles" late in 2021. At this time, this rumor has yet to be confirmed.

Star Wars: Republic Commando will drop onto both PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on April 6.
