Yooka-Laylee's Multiplayer Arcade Games Revealed In New Trailer

According to a brand new trailer, Yooka-Laylee, the brand new 3D-platformer from the people behind Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country, will ship with both local co-op and eight competitive multiplayer challenges that look like they'll accommodate up to four players at a time.

The brief video highlights Rextro's Radical Arcade, an in-game hub for Platonic Games' retro-inspired mini-games. In Yooka-Laylee's "Blag the Flag" mode, users play a Capture the Flag variant that takes place in a top-down maze that recalls Pac-Man and Bomberman. In "Glaciators," players duke it out with one another while trying to collect as many falling feathers as possible. Other games include a poker-themed racing challenge, a third-person shooter, a Mario Kart knock-off called "Kartos Karting," and an auto-scrolling obstacle course.

In addition, a second player will be able to participate in Yooka-Laylee's main story mode for some cooperative action as the "Bee Team." The Bee Team will help Yooka and Laylee by collecting quills and butterflies, stunning enemies, and disarming upcoming traps.

You won't need a friend or three to enjoy Yooka-Laylee's arcade games, of course—all eight mini-games are playable solo, and come equipped with global leaderboards that will players to compete with others worldwide in the hunt for the highest scores.

The interaction between the arcade mini-games and Yooka-Laylee's story mode might be deeper than it first appears, too. In a statement, Yooka-Laylee publisher Team 17 said, "those who are able to find and collect the special play coins within Yooka-Laylee's extensive single player campaign will even be able to power up the arcade cabinets located within the mysterious book worlds for a chance to win some sought-after pagies" ("pagies" being one of Yooka-Laylee's many collectible items).

Yooka-Laylee comes out on April 11, 2017 for PC, Mac, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Linux, and the Nintendo Switch, and is shaping up to be one of the many games that will blow players away in 2017.
