Ubisoft Teases Rainbow Six Siege Velvet Shell, Announces Demo Date
Video game publisher Ubisoft, responsible for the acclaimed Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Watch Dogs franchises, has gifted gaming fans with yet another exciting look at the latest DLC soon to hit the company's tactical FPS title, Rainbow Six Siege.
Entitled "Operation Velvet Shell," the forthcoming update was officially announced by Ubisoft earlier last week, with the publisher following up on details it teased back in November 2016 during its Year Two content breakdown. The DLC will bring players to the rocky-shored island Ibiza off the Mediterranean Sea, centering around two Spanish Grupo Especial de Operaciones (G.E.O.) Operators "whose organization was founded in 1977 during Spain's tumultuous transition to a democratic government." Ubisoft also stated that these new characters "join Team Rainbow to protect civilians vacationing on the 'Coastline,' our new free map."
Fans now have another sneak peek at "Operation Velvet Shell," this time in trailer form. Included is a preview of one of the update's G.E.O. Operators, Jackal. According to Ubisoft, quite a bit of thought was put into the creation of the character. Rainbow Six Siege event scriptwriter Farah Brixi stated that Jackal will be a force to be reckoned with: "When you pick Jackal you are sending a clear message to the opposing team: now they've got a target on their back. [Players] can expect Jackal to embody their resourcefulness in difficult terrains as his specialty lies in counter drug smuggling operations. He underwent extensive survival courses, tactical desert navigation programs, and specialized combat diving courses to gain this edge."
Additionally, the teaser trailer revealed a live demo date for the Rainbow Six Siege DLC: "Operation Velvet Shell" will be shown off in a presentation at the Six Invitational in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Invitational, a PC and Xbox One tournament, kicks off Feb. 3 and lasts through the weekend to Feb. 5. Two "Operation Velvet Shell" panels will take place on Day 2, with the live demo slated to begin at 1:15pm EST on Day 3. Fans will find out Jackal's (and the other Operator's) special ability during the event as well.
"Velvet Shell" has been rumored to be available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Feb. 7, though no official statement has been given. With news that another of the company's titles, Tom Clancy's The Division, is getting a film adaptation (starring big-ticket celebs Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal), it definitely seems as if Ubisoft is having something of a moment.
