I Expect You To Die 2 - What We Know So Far

When virtual reality puzzle game "I Expect You to Die" released in 2016, it wowed critics and players. Chris Kohler of Wired described the experience as "the most fun I've ever had in VR," while Wholesome Gamer declared it the new gold standard for VR titles. It went on to scoop up several awards and nominations and, according to developer Schell Games, over $6 million in gross revenue.

Given its track record, it likely comes as little surprise that Schell announced a sequel to the immersive spy puzzler at the start of 2021. "I Expect You to Die 2: The Spy and the Liar" returns players to the world of espionage, picking up after the events of the original game. Deep undercover, you set out on a fresh series of deadly missions, intent on uncovering the plans of the Zoraxis organization and the diabolical Dr. Zor."

If you can't wait to grab your VR headset and embark on another "James Bond"-esque adventure, here's what you should know about "I Expect You to Die 2."

What is the release date for I Expect You to Die 2?

Though Schell Games just revealed "I Expect You to Die 2" in January, players won't have to wait long to reenlist with the Agency. According to the official announcement, the followup will release later in 2021. The studio declined to provide a specific date or target season; however, you can Wishlist the game on Steam.

The reveal did not include which VR platforms "I Expect You to Die 2" will appear on, but a March update clarified that it would at least come to PlayStation VR. A third announcement popped up the following month, adding Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift to the array of options. The first game also released for PSVR and the two Oculus headsets, along with the HTC Vive.

Based on the strong reception of "I Expect You to Die," the sequel is already in the running to become one of the best VR games of 2021 – assuming it doesn't join the year's growing list of delayed titles.

Is there a trailer for I Expect You to Die 2?

Schell Games has shared two trailers for "I Expect You to Die 2: The Spy and the Liar." A 34-second teaser accompanied the sequel's reveal in January, followed by an extended version to support the PlayStation VR announcement two months later.

The expanded cut starts strong, offering a montage of gameplay while setting up the premise of the new entry. The voiceover reveals that only a small number of people know the player survived the events of the original game, a situation the Agency plans to make use of. Zoraxis, it seems is back at it again, and the world is counting on you to thwart the group's schemes — assuming you make it through the wealth of traps and betrayals headed your way. You have lots of threats to contend with, including bombs, pendulum saws, and crossbow bolts.

Concluding on a cliffhanger, the trailer leaves prospective players with a tantalizing line from a new character: "From one imposter to another ... break a leg." Is this the "liar" mentioned in the subtitle? Or someone else entirely?

What is the gameplay like in I Expect You to Die 2?

Much like the original title, you must use a combination of smarts and telekinetic abilities to solve a series of deadly puzzles in "I Expect You to Die 2." Capitalizing on the fact that Zoraxis believes you died in the first entry, the Agency sends you undercover to retrieve key intelligence from the organization. Beyond Dr. Zor, you encounter an expanded cast of villains who have offered Zoraxis their support. Though Zor remains priority number one, you also need to investigate these fresh threats.

In addition to the new characters, you have several new environments and locations to check out. Based on the PSVR announcement trailer, at least some of the action will take place in a theater. A section on the official website further supports this. "What do a playbill, a mask, and a top secret mission assignment have in common?" reads the description. "You, naturally. All the world's a stage, Agent, but please, stay out of the spotlight."

Whether you're returning to the franchise or just uncovering all that it has to offer, "I Expect You to Die 2" offers the chance to live out your ultimate spy fantasies.
