Everything We Know About Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker's Sage Job

Square Enix unveiled "Endwalker," the next "Final Fantasy 14" expansion, at the start of 2021. Set to release this fall, "Endwalker" will serve as the conclusion to the long-running Hydaelyn and Zodiark storyline. In addition to tying up several plot threads, the DLC promises a fresh housing area and playable race, along with new locations, tribes, dungeons, and raids.

As players explore never-before-seen locales like Old Sharlayan and Labyrinthos, they can test out the two unique jobs joining the roster in "Endwalker" — the melee DPS scythe-wielding Reaper and the healer Sage. Longtime fans of the franchise may recognize the latter job, which first appeared in "Final Fantasy 3" before making the jump to several subsequent entries. Given its history, it was only a matter of time before the Sage popped up in "Final Fantasy 14," though the version in "Endwalker" works a bit differently than its previous iterations.

Whether you've been waiting for it to debut in an "FF14" expansion or are simply excited by the prospect of another healer job, here's what you need to know about the "Endwalker" Sage class.

What abilities does the Sage job have in Final Fantasy 14 and how do you unlock it?

While Square Enix has not shared a complete breakdown of how the Sage job functions in "Endwalker," it offered an overview of what to expect during the Final Fantasy 14 Announcement Showcase in early 2021.

Unlike previous versions of the Sage that focused on white or black magic or status effects, the "Endwalker" job centers on healing, buffing, and barriers. The Sage wields Nouliths, Aether imbued weapons unique to "Final Fantasy 14." They can also augment their personal magical abilities — albeit temporarily. While there's no required class to pick up the Sage job, you need to be at least level 70 and complete a quest in Limsa Lominsa to embark on the path. You also need to have leveled at least one other job to 70 or higher and purchased the "Endwalker" expansion.

The Sage marks the fourth healer job to debut in "Final Fantasy 14," joining White Mage, Scholar, and Astrologian. As a barrier healer, Sage shares some similarities with the Scholar. In an effort to more clearly distinguish barrier healers from pure healers like the White Mage, Square Enix plans to rework Astrologian to place it squarely on the pure healer side of the divide.
