More Than 60 Indie Games Coming To The Nintendo Switch

In the latest Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced that over five dozen classic and brand new games from independent developers—or "Nindies," as the company calls them—will arrive on the upcoming Switch console in 2017. Further, Nintendo named 17 indie games in particular that should make their Switch debuts soon, including popular or highly anticipated titles like Yooka-Laylee, SteamWorld Dig 2, and Wargroove.

Many of the indie games scheduled for a Switch release are either exclusive to the console or have special features designed to take full advantage of the Switch's unique hardware. Shakedown Hawaii, the spiritual sequel Vblank Entertainment's Retro City Rampage, will arrive on the Switch before hitting other platforms, as will the teleportation-heavy Mr. Shifty and Graceful Explosion Machine, an arcade-style shooter. Games like the BIT.TRIP RUNNER follow-up Runner3 and Blaster Master Zero, a sequel-remake of the Nintendo Entertainment System original, will be Switch-exclusive releases.

Team 17 and Ghost Town Games' Overcooked: Special Edition will bring the popular multiplayer cooking game to the Nintendo Switch with all of its previously released downloadable content and support for the Switch's "HD Rumble" features, which Nintendo says will make players "feel every chop through a tomato and the slosh of soup in a pot." Similarly, Stardew Valley will get multiplayer support on the Switch before any other console.

In addition to the 17 games listed by name, a graphic promoting the Nindie program promises that games like Cave Story, Terraria, and the ToeJam & Earl reboot will also make their way to the Switch console sometime in 2017 (although, as always, the release dates could change).

The addition of a strong slate of indie games should help soothe the anxieties of fans who worry that the Switch's sparse launch line-up will doom the console before Nintendo can expand its library with new entries in some of its most popular series. The Nintendo Switch launches worldwide on March 3, 2017.
