Green Lantern Finds Redemption In Injustice 2 Story Trailer

Hal Jordan, who spent the first Injustice title fighting alongside Sinestro as the Yellow Lantern, is wearing his traditional green duds for the superhero-fighting game's upcoming sequel—and, according to Hal, he went through hell (and a few Red Lanterns) to get them back.

Jordan's reformation is just one of many shifting allegiances highlighted in the latest Injustice 2 story trailer, which is called, appropriately enough, "Shattered Alliances." In one scene, former enemies Batman and Damian Wayne rappel up the side of a building together for some father-son bonding, while the Flash looks like he's a fully committed member of Team Batman this time around.

Still, the crux of Injustice 2 boils down to the conflict between Batman and Superman, who turned into a despot after he accidentally killed Lois Lane at the Joker's behest. When the trailer begins, Bruce Wayne brags that Superman is stuck behind bars, but naturally, that doesn't stick. After trying to talk Batman into some well-intentioned murder (because Injustice's version of Superman is ice cold), Superman breaks out of prison for a battle with Doctor Fate, and ends up clashing with the Dark Knight in what looks like the game's finale—assuming that NetherRealm Studios doesn't have any more twists in store.

Injustice 2 takes place in an alternate universe in which DC's most popular heroes fight in order to control the world. Like the most recent editions of Mortal Kombat, which are also NetherRealm products, the Injustice series mixes an over-the-top narrative with fast and brutal one-on-one brawls. The first game, Injustice: Gods Among Us, was a surprise hit in spite of (or maybe because of) it's pitch-black tone, and Injustice 2 looks like it's going to be even darker (and, quite possibly, better). We'll find out for sure when the game releases on May 16, 2017.
