Guardians Of The Galaxy Strike A Bargain In Telltale's Game Launch Trailer

The Guardians of the Galaxy's next big adventure is here. No, not that one. The other one.

The first episode of Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series, Tangled up in Blue, arrives April 18, 2017—i.e. tomorrow—and to celebrate, Telltale Games released a new trailer that sets up the episode's basic story. In Tangled up in Blue, Star-Lord strikes a deal with the Nova Corps, an outer-space peacekeeping force. In exchange for a full pardon, the Guardians must infiltrate a Kree base, hunt down a superweapon, and take out the cosmic warlord known as Thanos. So, y'know, just another day at the intergalactic office.

That sounds straightforward, but Telltale promises that Guardians of the Galaxy will be full of surprises. While the game takes a number of cues from the movies—including the overall look and the films' snarky attitude—fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book should have a lot to look forward to as well.

Telltale Executive Producer Justin Lambros told IGN that the company's Guardians team turned to the source material in order to avoid repeating what Marvel was doing on the big screen. "One of the cool things is we don't want to tell an origin story again, try to retell what the [2014 Guardians] movie did," Lambros said. "But we did want to tell the history of these characters...we found some really interesting things the more we played and looked at their history."

Of course, Guardians of the Galaxy won't stray too far from the world that moviegoers know and love. As in the films, Guardians of the Galaxy's creative lead Sean Ainsworth says, "They're this unique kind of family, and we immediately started thinking about how we could stress that out. It wouldn't be a Telltale game without stress."

Like other Telltale games, Guardians of the Galaxy is a multi-episode title featuring interactive cutscenes and a branching narrative. Guardians of the Galaxy isn't first time that Telltale has tackled a well-known comic book property, either: previous titles include The Walking Dead, Batman, and A Wolf Among Us, which is based on the long-running Vertigo comic Fables. The digital version of Guardians of the Galaxy will be available to download tomorrow on consoles, PCs, and mobile devices. A retail version of the game launches on May 2, 2017.
