Games That Will Blow Everyone Away In 2022

The gaming landscape is about to change, due to the sheer amount of high-profile releases set for 2022. Microsoft, PlayStation, and Nintendo each have a plethora of blockbuster titles to satisfy all types of fans. Whether it be an expansive open world sequel or a new gaming property altogether, every player should be able to find something to satisfy their gaming needs. As long as nothing is delayed, it looks like 2022 is going to have it all.

Some projects on this list have already been delayed from previous years, but luckily they remain slated for 2022 — and maybe that extra time in the oven could be a good thing. As Shigeru Miyamoto once said (via The Guardian), "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad."

Many of the following games have been on fans' minds for quite some time, and these entries are sure to build suspense for an unprecedented year. Here are the games that will blow people away in 2022.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin

The acclaimed release of "Final Fantasy 7 Remake," the resurgence of "Final Fantasy 14," and the development of "Final Fantasy 16" all seem to indicate that Square Enix isn't letting up on the beloved series. "Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin" is taking the Square Enix IP even further with a more action-oriented adventure.

Developed by Team Ninja "Stranger of Paradise" features hack-and-slash and "Souls"-like mechanics. Players will take control of Jack Garland, a hero who lives the world of the original "Final Fantasy." Jack is able utilize physical and magic-based attacks with party members during his quest to destroy Chaos.

IGN has been able to provide fans with an extensive look at the gameplay in "Stranger of Paradise," and it's already looking great. A lock-on function allows players to engage enemies head-on before performing a brutal finisher. These final moves turn opponents into a crystallized form that Jack then crushes. "Final Fantasy" veterans might be surprised by some of the revamped combat and objectives, but jobs, skill trees, and consumable items return, helping the game retain its JRPG identity.

"Stranger of Paradise" is a step in an interesting direction for the franchise — even though it's already spawned a number of memes.

A Plague Tale: Requiem

Continuing the story of Amicia and Hugo, "A Plague Tale: Requiem" sees developer Asobo Studio seeking to improve on every aspect of the original game. A large draw to "A Plague Tale: Innocence" was its unflinching depiction of a rat-infested France in the mid-1300s. The period of the Black Death was a brutal one, and the game didn't shy away from that in its storytelling.

In the trailer for "Requiem," rats literally flood the desolate streets of France, signaling that the sequel will be bigger and possibly darker. Asobo Studios has teased its plans to leverage next-gen consoles to build on what was seen in "Innocence," with game director Kevin Choteau telling GamesRadar that the next generation of gaming "is about creating as much of a living world as you can."

The original "Plague Tale" was a cinematic journey with a focus on crafting and puzzles, but the new game will seek to make the world feel even more real. Choteau has said he wants parts of the world to be constantly "moving and reacting to [player] actions." After a telling reveal trailer, and a next-gen upgrade for "Innocence," anticipation for the sequel is at an all-time high.

Ghostwire: Tokyo

A timed PlayStation console exclusive, Bethesda's "Ghostwire: Tokyo" is shaping up to be a unique next-gen experience for PS5 and PC players in the coming year.

Despite a predominantly dark and brooding reveal teaser, "Ghostwire Tokyo's" subsequent trailers have painted a different picture. Colors positively pop in every frame, and yet the game still retains the supernatural horror feel that the developer is known for. The game's setting is a corrupted Tokyo and the enemies have been designed with the Japan's culture and history in mind.

Footage of the Tango Gameworks title has also shown off fast-paced first-person combat. In a huge departure from Tango's previous works, like "The Evil Within," the main character performs ninjutsu-style hand motions to fend off opponents. With its unique visual style and more action-packed gameplay, "Ghostwire: Tokyo" feels like a new direction for the company.

Unfortunately, "Ghostwire: Tokyo" has also had a wild development cycle. Not only has the PS5 exclusive been delayed, but the director of the game quit altogether (via VGC). Even with those issues plaguing production, "Ghostwire: Tokyo" seems finally poised to deliver chaotic horror and action in 2022.

Dying Light 2

Seven years is a large gap between a game and its sequel. Revealed at E3 2018, "Dying Light 2" is keeping the same post-apocalyptic setting and parkour gameplay as its predecessor. However, the game's creators want players to have more choices than ever. As noted by Game Revolution, individual player choices in video games can be hit and miss, with many proving to be inconsequential. "Dying Light 2" aims to change this notion.

In a "Dying Light 2" presentation unveiling the game's branching paths, the developer illustrated how brokering access to a city's water supply could drastically alter the environment and NPC behavior. Depicting two totally different outcomes, Techland successfully showed fans how decision-making will factor heavily into the new game.

The gameplay seen in "Dying Light" has also received an overhaul. In a recent gameplay trailer, players can see new parkour moves that allow for greater freedom of movement. The creators have also outlined the emphasis on making combat better as a whole. For instance, Techland has said that it is focused on making combat and weapons more "fun, satisfying, and well-executed."

Something that shouldn't go unnoticed as well is choosing how to deal with infected enemies. Players will be able to utilize movement to avoid encounters entirely or decide to combat them head-on. It's up to the player to choose "mobility and parkour or aggressive, blunt-forced combat," according to Techland.

"Dying Light 2" is a sequel fans have been waiting years for, and it might be worth the wait.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

"Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga" did the unthinkable when combining the first two "Lego Star Wars" games into one package. Remaking those games, combining them with elements of "Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and adding the stories of the final two "Star Wars" movies is a whole other beast, though. "Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga" is poised to be one of the best deals in gaming, allowing gamers to play through all 9 main movies in classic Lego style.

Although they've largely employed the same formula, the Lego games have changed quite a bit since 2007's "Complete Saga" was released. As noted by IGN, "The Force Awakens" included dialogue and third-person cover shooting to make the experience more fresh.

These changes and more will be reflected in the new collection. Head Designer for the game, Arthur Parsons, has said in an IGN interview that "the game is built on the premise of freedom, the ultimate freedom to go wherever you like in the 'Star Wars' galaxy." One thing the game is not built on, however, is a one-to-one recreation of the original games. Parsons has declared that this game is entirely new from the ground up, which sounds like any "Star Wars" or Lego fan's dream.

Splatoon 3

Originating on the Wii U in 2015 and already receiving its third entry, the "Splatoon" series is making its comeback in 2022. Thanks to a few trailers, fans have gotten to see some inklings of the changes and additions to come in "Splatoon 3."

In its reveal trailer, customization options, weapons, and new multiplayer maps were all shown off in succession. One noteworthy item in its initial unveiling is the bow and arrow weapon, which shakes things up after "Splatoon 2" introduced dual weapons.

The second trailer introduced players to even more gadgets, the Crab Tank. According to a tweet from Nintendo, this small mech sports "a powerful rapid-fire gun and a cannon" and is able to transform into a rolling ball.

Players will also have a new grappling hook ability, which will have players launching over to walls and creating large splats of paint when they land. While multiplayer is sure to be a blast, "Splatoon 3" also looks to have a fun and memorable story mode, just like the previous games.

TMNT Shredder's Revenge

Many nostalgic properties come and go in the video game industry, but "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is still going strong. The turtles' appearance in 2021's "Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl" was just the beginning, as the lovable ninjas are going into 2022 with more to offer.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge" arrives from DotEmu, the company responsible for resurrecting beloved franchises like "Wonder Boy" and "Streets of Rage." With this in mind, it's safe to say the franchise is in good hands.

Reinforcing this sense of good will is how the game's trailers have embraced the original animated series and 16-bit games. Try not to get excited when you hear the classic TV theme song play while the turtles, Splinter, and Rocksteady and Bebop interact onscreen. It's very apparent that the team working on "Shredder's Revenge" has a deep love for the source material.

"Shredder's Revenge" pays homage to classic "Ninja Turtles" experiences like the original Konami arcade game and "Turtles In Time." For instance, the classic move of throwing foot soldiers directly at the screen appears at the end of its reveal trailer in all its glory. Even more exciting is the implementation of 4-player co-op, which will allow characters like April O'Neil to get in on the action.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

"Borderlands 2" made a splash with its RPG-themed DLC, "Tiny Tina's Assault On Dragon Keep." "Tiny Tina's Wonderlands" seeks to recreate the sparks found in that critically acclaimed DLC — this time as a full game.

Shooting and looting is now done in a fantasy world full of sprawling environments, from snowy mountains to castle interiors. There are also an abundance of nods to the original "Borderlands" trilogy and "Dragon Keep," including the appearance of the2 fan-favorite diamond pony known as Butt Stallion.

As Matt Cox from Gearbox Games explained to Press Start Australia, "Tiny Tina's Wonderlands" took "inspiration from the jumping off point of 'Assault On Dragon Keep.'" But while many elements here may look familiar to longtime fans, Gearbox does want to make clear that this new journey is definitely a standalone piece.

In particular, melee weapons and combat are getting an overhaul. Producer Kayla Belmore explained that melee "is still a secondary combat system, but it is more in depth than previous titles." In many ways, "Tiny Tina's Wonderlands" is capitalizing on a beloved "Borderlands" quest while striving to push the series further. With every new interview and trailer, the new Tiny Tina adventure is looking more and more legendary.

Mario + Rabbids: Spark of Hope

How can "Mario + Rabbids" get even crazier? By sending Mario and company into space. The first game was already one of the best Mario games in recent history, and now "Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope" is poised to be a huge sequel.

Rabbid Peach took the world by storm when the first "Mario + Rabbids" game was leaked (via Eurogamer), and now Rabbid Rosalina is making her debut, traveling to a variety of outlandish worlds with the rest of Mario's crew.

While the original contained a good deal of levels based on the Mushroom Kingdom, the environments in "Sparks of Hope" look truly bizarre. Beep-0 (a divisive character from the first game) has more to do in this sequel, as well; the little robot has been shown in early gameplay footage helping Rabbid Peach fly over enemies for better mobility. These new moves may end up improving the already tight strategic gameplay seen in "Kingdom Battle."

"Mario + Rabbids" came as a shock to many when it was released to ecstatic reviews. The original received praise from outlets like Nintendo Life for its gameplay depth and its deft mixing of the two properties. It's looking like this intergalactic trek will be even grander.

Redfall

Arkane Studios is famous for creating first-person single-player campaigns, so it likely came as a shock for fans to find out it was beginning to work on a cooperative open-world title. In the game's reveal trailer, viewers were met with a cinematic trailer featuring a ragtag group of survivors duking it out with vampire creatures. Though the game is multiplayer-focused, Arkane has stated that "Redfall" will be playable as a solo experience as well.

Arkane's catalogue includes the likes of "Dishonored," "Prey," and "Deathloop." A commonality for these projects is strategic action, and "Redfall" sounds like it will follow suit. In an IGN interview, Bethesda's Pete Hines explained that the game "requires a bit more thoughtful approach, especially dealing with some of these bosses."

Controversy arose for the project when an early playtest for the game leaked. Fans have noted that alleged pictures of the UI and menus seem reminiscent of looter shooters like "Borderlands," and the resulting backlash (per Destin) has been directed towards the game's overall presentation. However, it's important to keep in mind that these images are from an early build and could still change. Controversy aside, Arkane's track record is accruing more and more anticipation from hardcore Bethesda fans.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Six long years have gone by since the release of "Batman: Arkham Knight." At last, Rocksteady is set to kickstart the next DC video game — but the developer is shifting its attention from single-player-driven stories to multiplayer experiences. "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League" officially has a 2022 release date and fans are salivating for just a sliver of gameplay.

Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, and King Shark make up the titular group of criminal misfits in this wild adventure. The first footage from the game displayed what Suicide Squad lovers might expect: bonkers action and back-and-forth banter between team members. Confused about what their objective is, the villains are finally met by their target: A vicious-looking Superman.

Shedding more light on this twist is the trailer that debuted at 2021's DC FanDome virtual condition, which also shows off a corrupted Flash, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern. Overall, "Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League" is under a large amount of pressure to meet fan expectations. While it's not yet clear just how the game will play, the wild story and beloved characters on display is probably enough to encourage fans to welcome back Rocksteady with open arms.

Gotham Knights

Rocksteady isn't the only Warner Bros. developer transitioning to DC multiplayer games. A very quiet WB Montreal is hard at work on a co-op Batman game, "Gotham Knights."

With Batman seemingly dead, this game instead centers around Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, and Red Hood. Even with the new cast, the gameplay is reminiscent of the "Arkham" series, particularly when it comes to grapple and combat mechanics. Differing completely, however, is the inclusion of co-operative play.

WB Montreal has explained that "Gotham Knights" was designed from the ground up with two-player co-op in mind. As executive producer Fleu Marty explained to GamesRadar, "the two-player dynamic fits the fantasy and the Gotham City setting," pointing to the traditional "Dynamic Duo" description of Batman and Robin as proof.

This game also introduces the villainous Court of Owls, who were originally teased in a series of tweets from WB Games Montreal. In the latest story trailer for "Gotham Knights," the sinister organization takes center stage. The fact that Montreal is opting to feature newer villains makes the game feel even more distinct.

Already eliciting positive reactions from oulets like Gameranx, "Gotham Knights" aims to satiate fans who have been itching for a true multiplayer Batman experience.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus

The "Pokemon" franchise has done very little to innovate in the past several years, but "Pokemon Legends: Arceus" could be a turning point for the franchise's future. Looking a great deal like "Breath of the Wild," "Pokemon Legends: Arceus" is trying its hand at a more open approach to the formula.

A presentation for the game was put out in August by the official Pokemon YouTube channel, which gave more specifics for the game's world and objectives. "Arceus" takes place in the earliest part of the Pokemon timeline. As a result, fans will be happy to learn more about the origins of the series. Creating the first Pokedex is the primary goal for players when exploring the new Hisui Region, which is an early version of the fan favorite Sinnoh Region.

Nature is a major theme for the game, and players will find themselves exploring grassy plains and lush forests during their quests. In these areas, "Pokemon Legends: Arceus" introduces a more intuitive way of catching and battling Pokemon. A gameplay breakdown from Game Freak illustrates how specific Pokemon will interact differently than others, proving that stealth and observation will be key when capturing Pokemon.

Battles themselves have changed considerably with the implementation of "Strong" and "Agile" fighting styles. These options will alter the way moves are performed, since Strong style will increase attack power while creating a decrease in attack speed.

Pokemon is finally changing up its formula, which makes "Pokemon Legends: Arceus" a game to be on the lookout for in the coming year.

Hogwarts Legacy

It's difficult not to root for next licensed games, since they focus on well-tested and beloved characters and settings. But for every "Batman: Arkham Asylum," there's a bomb like "Marvel's Avengers" right behind. "Hogwarts Legacy" is aiming to be a "Harry Potter" game worth playing.

And fans have been waiting for this one for a while, ever since its existence leaked more than a year before its official announcement. The leak in question revealed a close (albeit blurry) look at gameplay. Just from that first clip, fans learned that "Hogwarts Legacy" features character creation and RPG mechanics, as well as classic spells like Expulso, Stupefy, and Depulso.

Although set in the "Harry Potter" universe, "Hogwarts Legacy" is set way back in the 1800s and focuses on a different cast of characters. In the official trailer, players get a look at dark caverns and beaches shores are depicted, but it appears the bulk of the game occurs within Hogwarts itself. Classrooms, hallways, and dining rooms are incredibly detailed, suggesting a faithful (and explorable) recreation of the castle.

While "Harry Potter" has been represented in gaming with fun projects like the "Lego Harry Potter" games and previous adaptations of the books, this looks to be a true AAA experience set in the Wizarding World.

Gran Turismo 7

The last mainline "Gran Turismo" game arrived in the form of 2013's "Gran Turismo 6." Now, eight years later, a direct sequel is launching for both the PS4 and PS5 with "Gran Turismo 7." In the meantime, fans of the series got 2017's "GT Sport," which proved to be a controversial installment, to say the least.

"GT Sport" received a middling reception from fans because of stripped-down content, multiplayer-focused play, and an online connection requirement. The series is planning to redeem itself by bringing back the content that fans want. Upgrading and customizing cars will return amongst a bigger selection of vehicles, improved performance, and a larger single-player offering.

Sadly, "Gran Turismo 7" does carry over a controversial part of "GT Sport": the online connection requirement. Due to save file restrictions, Polyphany has declared that an online connection is needed for the majority of the game. Arcade mode is the only portion that will not demand this restriction. Online-only games can be a touchy subject, with the aforementioned "GT Sport" and the "Hitman" series proving to be controversial in recent memory. Even so, the gameplay shown off during Sony's PlayStation Showcase certainly paints a pretty picture for longtime fans of the series, and "Gran Turismo" will undoubtedly drive past the competition with its potential offerings.

Starfield

"Fallout," "The Elder Scrolls," and "Doom" are flagship franchises with which Bethesda has made a name for itself — and soon "Starfield" might join the ranks. The pressure is on, especially when considering that "Starfield" is Bethesda's first new IP in 25 years.

Rather than give fans a series of gameplay showcases, Bethesda has been creating hype in other ways. A new cinematic teaser was released during E3 2021, drawing in gamers looking for an expansive and graphically impressive sci-fi RPG. Aside from these scraps of footage, the only real information about what the game is really like has been delivered by Bethesda Director Todd Howard, who declared that Starfield is "like Skyrim in space." If that isn't exciting enough, he has further claimed that the game is "also a bit more hardcore of a roleplaying game," which suggests that the game's mechanics may have more depth than previous Bethesda titles. Lastly, "Starfield" is being built with the new Creation Engine, giving more weight to its next-gen exclusivity.

Bethesda has also clued gamers into the typical offerings that come with... well, a Bethesda game. The game contains a number of factions and different alien races, hinting at an even more expansive experience. Still, beyond some developer comments and an engrossing cinematic trailer, players are still a bit in the dark while they wait for November 2022 — which is exciting in its own way.

Elden Ring

Hot on the heels of "Sekiro" is FromSoftware's "Souls"-like approach to the open world genre, "Elden Ring." As described by Metro, "Souls" games have been primarily identified by their grueling combat, role-playing elements, and occasional Metroidvania progression. "Elden Ring" will likely retain these characteristics while infusing some new mechanics.

When first unveiled, the big hook of the game was in its very conception. Famed writer George R. R. Martin was involved with the early planning phases, and he himself has elaborated on his role. Speaking about early development, Martin stated that "[FromSoftware] wanted world building... and I worked up a fairly detailed background for them." Martin is known for his intricate storytelling and world building in "Game of Thrones," so seeing his influence in a FromSoftware game is a match made in heaven for fantasy fans.

Boss encounters and exploration are staples of any "Souls"-like game, and these items were highlighted in the latest gameplay trailers. Fights look to be extravagant, with players facing down lightning bolt-wielding dragons and towering giants. During these scenes, the main character can be seen being beaten down, which hints at that classic FromSoftware difficulty curve.

"Elden Ring" is a game that will no doubt blow gamers away in 2022, especially since fans are already erupting with excitement from each second of new footage that is shown off.

Horizon: Forbidden West

The original "Horizon: Zero Dawn" was a landmark undertaking for Guerilla Games, garnering excellent reviews from critics and fans. Finally, Guerilla is bringing back Aloy for a new quest that occurs in a decaying San Fransisco area.

PlayStation owners got a great look at "Forbidden West" gameplay during the Sony's State of Play livestream in May 2021. The game already looks absolutely beautiful from a graphical standpoint; deep sea reefs are gorgeous and have many excited for the inclusion of underwater exploration.

On the gameplay front, "Forbidden West" seems like it will offer even more creativity and player choice during action scenarios than the first game did. An example is Aloy being able to highlight climbing points in the surrounding area, showing the player different paths they can take. Meanwhile, Aloy's melee combat has been revamped with combos that lead into her bow attacks and show-stealing cinematic finishing moves.

Aloy also has some all new gadgets and tools at her disposal. Her futuristic paraglider looks like it came right out of "Breath of the Wild," while her grappling hook is going to make traversal even more interesting. Controllable raptor robots seem to be one of the biggest additions to an updated roster of mounts that Aloy can interact with, too.

Everything about the marketing for "Horizon: Forbidden West" implies that the sequel will be bigger and better in every way, and Aloy's continued journey is sure to captivate PlayStation players.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2

"Breath of the Wild" shocked the world in its newfound approach to open world design. Booting up the game and seeing that all of Hyrule is immediately accessible is something that will be difficult to top, but if there's any game that could beat out that experience, it's "Breath of the Wild 2."

So much is thrown at viewers in the game's first and second teasers, including a cavernous walkway beneath Hyrule castle, Ganondorf's seemingly revived corpse, and aerial exploration — but this is just the tip of the iceberg. "Breath of the Wild 2" is holding so much back, including its own name. Nintendo refuses to release the actual title of the sequel, as it may give too much away prior to release.

What is known, however, is that time is a major factor in the game. Music plays backwards during the trailer, Supporting this is the first teaser, which has music playing backwards throughout. Meanwhile, players have noticed that Link's new rune powers can deflect objects by sending them backwards in time. Also Link has a flamethrower now. That doesn't really have anything to do with time, but Link with a flamethrower needs to be mentioned.

The five year wait is almost over, and with fan theories reaching a fever pitch, the "Breath of the Wild" sequel will be sure to turn people's heads, whether they're Switch owners or not.

God of War: Ragnarok

2018's "God of War" was a critically-acclaimed masterpiece that set the world ablaze and proved to be a much-needed rebirth for Kratos. Although Cory Barlog isn't directing this time around, "God of War: Ragnarok" does not appear to be losing any momentum. The finale of Kratos' Norse mythology arc is at hand.

Whereas the previous game toyed with six realms — with some more content-heavy than others — "Ragnarok" game boasts nine fully explorable realms, which house some intriguing areas, like a waterside town that is reachable by boat. Building upon the transportation options is a sled that can be utilized on snowy summits.

"God of War" gained acclaim from fans for its near-perfect hack and slash combat. The Reveal Trailer for "Ragnarok" showed a bit of how this installment will build on the mechanics of the first game. Atreus will still assist Kratos, and he can be seen riding spirit mounts in the background of encounters. Kratos' pre-existing arsenal is featured in the trailer, as well as some new enemy beasts and creatures. Additionally, all eyes have been on the new game's version of Thor, which fans got a better look at through a character portrait by art designer Raf Grassetti
