A Plague Tale: Requiem Release Date, Trailer And Gameplay - What We Know So Far

2019's "A Plague Tale: Innocence" is undoubtedly one of the most revered story-based games in recent memory. Following the protective Amicia de Rune as she guides her ill brother to safety amid the Hundred Years' War and the emergence of the black plague in the 14th century, the game earned praise from critics and gamers due to its enthralling narrative and thrilling stealth mechanics that involves evading both the French Inquisition and massive amounts of plague-infested rats. Despite many players foolishly skipping over it immediately following its release, "A Plague Tale: Innocence" got its flowers in the end and earned a countless amount of award nominations for its narrative, including a win for Outstanding Story-Rich Game at the 2019 Steam Awards. Three years later, developer Asobo Studio and publisher Focus Entertainment will attempt to add on to this brilliant piece of art with a sequel, "A Plague Tale: Requiem."

A follow-up to the beloved action-adventure stealth game should prove to be good news for fans of the first title and those who want to see the next chapter in Amicia and Hugo's story. But what exactly should players expect from "A Plague Tale: Requiem" and how will it build upon the sturdy foundation that was set by "Innocence?" Here's everything we know so far about "A Plague Tale: Requiem."

What is the release date for A Plague Tale: Requiem?

Back in June 2022, it was announced that "A Plague Tale: Requiem" would receive its worldwide release on October 18, 2022. The announcement came as part of an extended gameplay trailer, showing off the technological advancements Asobo Studio has made since the release of the first game. "A Plague Tale: Requiem" will be, for the most part, a next-gen exclusive and will release for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the PC. However, a cloud version of the game will be available for the Nintendo Switch as well. The game retails at the  price of $49.99.

In addition to the base game, "A Plague Tale: Requiem" also has a Collector's Edition, which comes with a resin statue of Amicia and Hugo, metal version of Hugo's feather brooch, collector's box, store-exclusive cover art, vinyl record, and three lithographs. This sizeable Collector's Edition is a Focus Entertainment store exclusive and does pack in a ton of cool collectibles, but it's going to cost you, as it's listed currently at $189.99.

Is there a trailer for A Plague Tale: Requiem?

"A Plague Tale: Requiem" received its reveal trailer on June 21, 2021 as part of E3 2021. But since then, a lot more footage has been shown and has given players more context for what story the game will be telling and what it will ultimately look like. A short minute-and-a-half gameplay trailer was shown in December 2021 at The Game Awards, showcasing both the gorgeous landscapes the game will feature as well as the bleak effects of the ongoing war and the return of the Black Death, which was thought to have vanished at the end of the "Innocence."

Most recently, "A Plague Tale: Requiem" received a much more in-depth gameplay overview trailer on August 18, 2022 which not only gives future players a better look at the improved gameplay, but also provides more details on Amicia's journey to find help for the blood disease that Hugo is afflicted with as the two carefully evade the growing threats around them.

What will the gameplay be like in A Plague Tale: Requiem?

Much like its predecessor, "A Plague Tale: Requiem" will be an action-adventure stealth title in which Amicia and Hugo must avoid hostile French forces and the plague-carrying rats. However, this sequel won't be a simple regurgitation of the first game's loop — Asobo Studio has ramped things up in a big way. One of the more popular aspects of "A Plague Tale: Innocence" were the gameplay sections in which Amicia and Hugo avoided rats using fire to disperse the large infestations. In "A Plague Tale: Requiem," this engaging component will make a return, but will be upped dramatically as up to 300,000 rats can now be rendered at once (per IGN).

The setting will also be receiving a change. As opposed to the dark and dreary Aquitaine in which the first game was set, "A Plague Tale: Requiem" will be set in the more lush and diverse Provence. "Provence will provide a new, more colorful, and more vibrant palette," said the game's lead writer Sébastien Renard (via Xbox). "It allows us to bring signature grounded and emotion-heavy tones to other landscapes, creating an even sharper contrast between the harsh reality of the medieval setting, in which terrible events are happening, and beautiful, sometimes uncharted environments."
