Cliffhanger Game Endings We Still Don't Have Answers To
By NATHAN SIMMONS
Spoiler Warning!
This story contains spoilers for the plots and endings of the following video games.
Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Although a “Half-Life 2: Episode 3” was planned, it has been over a decade since “Episode 2” ended with Alyx clutching her deceased father and the Combine about to turn the tide of the war. In 2017, series writer Marc Laidlaw gave fans an unofficial idea of how the series would have ended, posting a short story featuring thinly veiled versions of “Half-Life” characters.
Mega Man Legends 2
The ending of “Mega Man Legends 2” left several plot threads unresolved, the most pressing of which is the fact that our hero was left stranded on the moon with no way to get home. Though a sequel was announced around a decade later for the Nintendo DS, Capcom eventually decided not to go through with it.
Resident Evil Gaiden
“Resident Evil Gaiden” followed Leon Kennedy as he investigated a green-blooded shapeshifter on a luxury cruise liner. The game's final shot showed Leon bleeding green blood, implying that he'd been replaced by the shapeshifter — but Leon turned up very human a few years later in “Resident Evil 4” so the events of Gaiden would appear not to be canonical to the series.
The Darkness 2
The finale of “The Darkness 2” saw protagonist Jackie Estacado literally cast himself into Hell, in an attempt to be with his girlfriend Jenny, but gets tricked into staying there for eternity. In the comics that the game is based on, Jackie does make it out of Hell, but unfortunately, players will never know since a planned DLC for the game was canceled due to its low sales.
Syphon Filter
The post-credits scene of “Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow” showed series protagonist Gabe Logan bleeding out as the screen goes black. A former Sony Bend employee explained that series director John Garvin felt "burned out" on the franchise and said, “Garvin literally killed off the main character so he wouldn't have to make any more SF games.”
