DIABLO IMMORTAL JUST CROSSED AN UNFORTUNATE MILESTONE
By CHRISTIAN SMITH
At BlizzCon 2018, the announcement of “Diablo Immortal” was immediately met with resistance and backlash from fans of the series who were expecting a AAA title as opposed to a presumably stripped down mobile version. Eventually, Blizzard attempted to placate the fanbase by including a port for PC, but the gesture didn’t save the company from a second serving of public backlash.
Despite receiving fairly positive marks from critics for its gameplay, “Diablo Immortal” has been panned by gamers due to its inclusion of microtransactions that have been deemed “pay to win.” Fans’ distaste has caused an unfortunate milestone for Blizzard: “Diablo Immortal” is the company’s second-lowest rated game on Metacritic with a lowly score of 0.6.
Blizzard has tried to come to the defense of the title, with game director Wyatt Cheng claiming that much of the backlash over microtransactions is due to misinformation. However, with so many contrary reports, it's likely that “Diablo” fans will not be buying this explanation unless serious changes are made to the game's microtransaction system.
