Hidden Gems For the Nintendo Wii U
By SHAWN FARNER
Fast Racing Neo
“Fast Racing Neo” is a futuristic racer that apes the style of the F-Zero series with hyper-fast vehicles and tracks that disregard gravity. Critics enjoyed the game, which comes from unknown developer Shin'en Multimedia, citing its controls, track design, and sense of speed.
Devil's Third
“Devil's Third” combines the hack-and-slash genre with aspects of first-person shooters. Reviewers in the west overwhelmingly scored the game poorly, but critics in Japan felt differently about the title, and it developed a cult following that loved its smooth combat and fun multiplayer experiences.
Tokyo Mirage
“Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE” was well received across the board, with reviewers enjoying the RPG’s story, its combat systems, and its art style. It just had the unfortunate luck of dropping for a console that didn't have much enthusiasm surrounding it and was already on its way out.
Captain Toad
In “Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker”, Toad navigates through a landscape, avoiding obstacles and enemies to reach a gold star. “Captain Toad” dropped in December 2014 along with “Destiny”, “Grand Theft Auto V”, and “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare”, which may have obscured it, but critics felt it was a fun game for $39.99.
Lego City
“Lego City Undercover” has an original story and all the platforming and puzzling fans expect in a Lego title. Slow sales of the Wii U meant it wasn't going to get quite the attention it could have on other consoles, but reviewers fell in love with the game's humor and its more family-friendly take on a “Grand Theft Auto”-type world.
