The NES Game That Takes The Longest to Beat
By ETHAN ZACK
The NES is fairly primitive by modern gaming standards, often lacking a save function, which lends itself to shorter, replayable titles such as "Super Mario Bros." and "Mega Man 2." JRPGs like "Final Fantasy" and "Dragon Quest" got their start on the NES and are known to be lengthy — but while the longest NES game is a JRPG, it isn’t one of the usual suspects.
According to HowLongToBeat, the NES game that will take up the most hours of time is "Might and Magic Book One: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum," a 1990 port of the 1986 Apple II game of the same name. The game's page lists the average time to beat the main story as roughly 43-and-a-half hours, with the average for all playstyles clocking in around 58 hours.
“Might and Magic Book One” thrusts players into the mystical world of VARN, where they control a party of characters searching for the secret of the Inner Sanctum, a fabled location. The game uses a turn-based combat and movement system and allows players to build characters, selecting from various classes, mythical races, and morality alignments.
