Why God Of War's Kratos Looks So Familiar
By STEPHEN MICHAELS
The 2022 Game Awards was a big night for “God of War Ragnarök” and for Kratos' voice actor, Christopher Judge, as he took home the award for Best Performance. Some viewers of the Game Awards both acquainted and unfamiliar with “God of War” may have felt that Judge looked or sounded familiar, and it's because he’s had a long, successful career as an actor.
Judge began his career in an episode of the popular series “MacGyver” playing Deron, a high school student and football player who just doesn’t see the point of learning physics — that is, until MacGyver shows him. During that same decade, Judge played minor roles in such shows as “21 Jump Street” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” until finally getting his big break in 1997.
In 1997, Judge starred as the renegade alien Teal'c in “Stargate SG-1,” the cult television follow-up to the hit sci-fi movie “SG-1.” Judge had a big part in shaping his role, as he often worked with the writers to deepen Teal’c’s character — and Judge even wrote a few episodes of the show to address his concerns regarding representation of people of color.
From 2000 to 2003, while still playing Teal’c on “Stargate SG-1,” Judge voiced Magneto on “X-Men: Evolution” cartoon. Even before "God of War," Judge lent his voice to other shows like “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” and even got into voicing video games with the “Def Jam” series and “Turok.”
