Why Valve Never Released Left 4 Dead 3
By ERIK PETROVICH
Valve, a longstanding icon in PC gaming, has never released a sequel with the number three in the title, but it has made plenty of spin-offs and DLC episodes for almost all of its major games — except for “Left 4 Dead.” Thanks in large part to Geoff Keighley's exposé “Half-Life: Alyx – The Final Hours” fans learned two major factors for why “Left 4 Dead 3” didn’t happen.
Keighley explained that Source 2 and “Left 4 Dead 3” were in development at the same time and the ambitious goals the team had for this follow-up were too much for the engine to handle. As technical issues mounted with Source 2, “Left 4 Dead 3” was put on an indefinite hiatus so the engine could be finished, but Valve's focus shifted and “Left 4 Dead 3” evaporated over time.
“Left 4 Dead” and “Left 4 Dead 2” remain two of the most critically praised zombie games, and a vibrant modding community has kept players coming back over the years. With no plans at Valve to make another “Left 4 Dead” game, “Back 4 Blood” is the closest thing to “Left 4 Dead 3” — a spiritual successor that had much of the original “Left 4 Dead” team behind it.
