Will Luigi's Mansion 3 Have DLC?

Luigi's Mansion 3 is set to arrive later this year for the Nintendo Switch, giving us the chance to explore a creepy hotel as Mario's scaredy-cat brother, Luigi. But just how high will the hotel go? And is there a possibility of Nintendo adding more content to Luigi's Mansion 3 over time?

In an interview with GameSpot, Kensuke Tanabe — the producer of Luigi's Mansion 3 — addressed the possibility of future DLC for the game, which could take the shape of additional floors in the 17-story hotel.

"Because like you said, it's a hotel structure with multiple floors, I think it would have been possible to add even more floors," Tanabe said. "But, I think the hardest part of that is not necessarily the act of adding floors, but it's like ... the story is done, so by adding, how are we going to expand that aspect? Because I want to experience completing the whole hotel and just feel satisfied that it's done. Adding on new stuff is not really something that gives us that."

GameSpot made the point — quite accurately — that this is a departure from what a lot of other game studios are doing. Even games that are mostly single-player affairs are looking for ways to keep players coming back, turning almost every title, regardless of genre, into a live-service experience that continues on and on. And Tanabe had some feelings about that, as well.

"Of course, we have titles like that in Nintendo too," he said. "Personally, I think there's got to be a couple of content updates over time because it's really fun. But I don't feel like we need to necessarily do that with all of our titles. So, this is entirely based on my personality, but I'm someone who likes to finish something and then move on."

So there you have it: it appears Luigi's Mansion 3 will not get DLC after its launch. There are multiplayer modes for those who want to experience Luigi's Mansion 3 with friends, and that could add some replayability to the final package. But if you're hoping for a content add-on similar to the one Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker got this year, you probably shouldn't hold your breath.

Luigi's Mansion 3 is slated for a 2019 release. No specific release date has been revealed as of yet.
