One-Third Of Cyberpunk 2077 Pre-Orders So Far Have Been Sold On GOG
Here's a stat that should make the accountants at CD Projekt Group extremely pleased.
According to the CD Projekt Red Twitter account, a third of all Cyberpunk 2077's digital pre-orders on PC have happened on CD Projekt Group's online marketplace, GOG.com. Yes, a third! That's a huge deal, and a rather shocking thing to learn, at that. Here's why.
For starters, CD Projekt Group gains all of the proceeds from CDPR games being sold on GOG; there's no Steam 30% being taken here, which means CDPR gets to keep more of its money. Nice. Second, Cyberpunk 2077 is an enormous title that will likely do gangbusters in sales, and it's being sold on a DRM-free storefront and doing quite well in the process. That's just a surprising thing to see, especially when you consider how hard other companies work at trying to lock their games down.
And lastly, who knew GOG had this kind of audience? It makes sense that CD Projekt would sell some copies through the store, but a third of them? GOG managed to steal a third of Cyberpunk's pre-orders away from Steam on PC? That's remarkable.
Cyberpunk 2077 now has a release date, by the way, in case you were asleep during E3. The game arrives on April 16, 2020, and is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. We're still in the dark as far as what a lot of the game's campaign will entail, but we do know (thanks to Microsoft's press conference at E3) that Keanu Reeves will play a character called Johnny Silverhand and will have a major role in Cyberpunk's story.
We'll undoubtedly get more news on Cyberpunk 2077 as we get closer to the end of the year. In the meantime, though, you can learn what you might not know about Cyberpunk and — if you're a Steam user — thank your lucky stars that CD Projekt Red is skipping out on Epic Games Store exclusivity.
When we hear more about Cyberpunk 2077 in the future, we'll clue you in.
