Tetris 99 To Receive Physical Release On Switch

Tetris 99 has been fairly hot since its surprise release back in February. Now the game is jumping out of Nintendo Switch Online and into retail stores.

Nintendo Life reports that Tetris 99 will be getting a physical release in the West, with Europe serving as the game's first stop. And it appears the game's Big Block DLC will be included in the retail edition of the game at no extra cost, along with a 12-month Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Whether that's a great deal or not, we can't say, as there's not yet any pricing information for Tetris 99's retail version. But it's worth noting that access to the game is free with a Switch Online sub, and one of those comes bundled. So you'll probably be spending at least the equivalent of $20, and likely more than that, since you'll have access to Tetris 99's offline modes even if you don't have a Switch Online subscription anymore.

As far a release date is concerned, Tetris 99 is dropping into European retailers on Sept. 20, 2019. And as Nintendo Life so astutely points out, that's the same day The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening remake comes out on Switch. There could be a bit of strategy behind that, if Nintendo hopes to send Link's Awakening buyers home with that game plus Tetris 99 and a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. But we can't say for certain if the release date decision was intentional.

There's no word yet on Tetris 99's physical release date for North America, nor do we have any details on how the game might be priced. Nintendo of America tweeted pretty recently about Tetris 99's fifth Maximus Cup kicking off this weekend, so it seems like the right time to make another Tetris-related announcement. We'll keep some eyes on Nintendo of America's Twitter account and update if necessary.
