Will There Be A Days Gone Sequel?

Days Gone landed rather awkwardly when it released on the PS4 in April 2019. There were lots of bugs, for starters. The gameplay wasn't all that enthralling. And it made the world question if another zombie game really needed to exist.

The game's mixed reception have led some to wonder: will there be a Days Gone sequel? Believe it or not, it's possible! Now, it's important to note that we don't have any official word from Sony on the matter; it's far too early for that. We do believe, however, that others have made strong cases as to why Days Gone could get a follow-up.

For instance, Gaming Bolt notes how strong the sales were for Days Gone in the United Kingdom. At the time of its release, Days Gone actually had the biggest launch of any 2019 title that had come out prior. That's nothing to scoff at, as it means there was clearly an audience for the title somewhere, even if the game wasn't a standout sales-wise in the United States.

VG247 also had some thoughts on the potential for a sequel to Days Gone, stating that Sony was "right to take a risk" with giving Oregon-based Bend a bigger title, and that "it's possible Sony's next great exclusive will be Days Gone 2." That argument seems to lean on the idea that, now that Bend has a larger project under its belt, the studio will be better equipped to deliver on whatever it does next. It's a solid argument.

The ending of the game itself, though, may offer the best proof. According to USgamer, the secret ending found in Days Gone (spoiler warning) suggests that the game's Freaker virus is mutating, and that a lot more humans are about to become infected. Not only that, but the virus is becoming more powerful, and the researchers at Nero have known this all along. We aren't sure where Sony itself would rate Days Gone on a scale of success from one through ten, but if the game did just barely well enough to earn a sequel, there's certainly a story being set up to support it.

Unfortunately, we'll have to wait and see. We wouldn't expect to hear about a Days Gone sequel until Sony's next-generation console comes out, and that likely won't be until late next year at the earliest. If you're still itching to play Days Gone, however, the game received plenty of post-launch content. That might be as close as you get to a true follow-up for a while.
