How long does it take to beat Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey?

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey sure sounds one heck of a video game journey. You're tasked with progressing through time, starting out as a primate who needs to evolve, adapt and survive in order to take on its final shape: human. That took billions upon billions of years in the real world. The question is, how long will that take in the game?

Reviews are starting to pour in for Ancestors, and according to VG247, the game will take "around 30 to 40 hours to complete." That's great news for those who want a lot of playability from their purchases. The only problem is, many reviews are stating that the game's mechanics are so difficult to understand and its systems are so "clunky" that your 30 to 40 hours will feel like more than that in the worst way possible.

Case in point: VG247 completed the game in that 40 hour window. IGN, however, noted that it "spent roughly 40 hours starting and restarting" because each new playthrough revealed some other important bit about the game that wasn't mentioned previously. That makes Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey sound more akin to a roguelike than a Civilization-style trip through the ages, and that's definitely not what the game is intended to be.

We're very curious to see how short the campaign times get once more people get their hands on the game. It sounds like Ancestors players will need some guides and FAQs in order to understand all of the game's functions, and that could help people progress a little more quickly. It's also possible that Panache — the developer behind Ancestors — could patch the game and make the experience a little more friendly.

Until then, if the question is "How long does it take to beat Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey?" the answer likely falls somewhere within that 30-40 hour window; that is, if you can stick with it.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey releases on PC (by way of the Epic Games Store) tomorrow, Aug. 27. You'll also be able to play Ancestors on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in December 2019.
