Gears 5: Changes To Microtransactions Could Be Coming
All things considered, things have gone pretty swimmingly for Gears 5 since it launched toward the beginning of the month. The critics have been kind to the game, with many calling it the best Gears entry yet. And even those who care more about looks say Gears 5 is gorgeous, and is quite possibly the closest to next-gen we are at the moment. But those microtransactions.
Some are not thrilled about how certain items are priced in Gears 5 store. Further, though the game commits to making sure players can simply play and grind for whatever they want to earn, some believe the game takes that grind a little too far, in turn causing players to turn to their wallets. Now The Coalition's Rod Fergusson is addressing the outcry over Gears 5's microtransactions head-on, promising that the studio behind the latest Gears may have changes planned for the future.
"We're learning as we go," Fergusson said in response to a concerned fan on Twitter. "This is a completely different economy from Gears 4 (removed Gear packs) so it will take a little time to work through any issues. Our first attempt is not our last and we will continue to evolve until we get it right."
It's not uncommon for games to launch with microtransactions and other paid add-ons that feel a little out of whack. In fact, it's entirely possible that one of your favorite games had to shift its strategy with microtransactions, whether they were too expensive, or the gameplay-based grind for them was too outrageous, or they just didn't fit, period. It's nice to hear that Fergusson and the team at The Coalition are open to switching things up if more players find the cosmetics in Gears 5 don't feel right. Hopefully that change happens sooner rather than later, though, as Gears 5 is in its formative days in terms of building an online community. Bad press is really something the game doesn't need.
We'll keep you up to speed should we get more details about potential changes to Gears 5's microtransactions. Until then, stay tuned.
