Could We See An Overwatch Character Join Smash Bros?

We're used to hearing a lot of requests for new Smash Bros. characters. We've also grown accustomed to seeing rumors about such character additions pop up. It's not often we can trace the source of the hubbub back to a major developer like Blizzard, but that's exactly what's happening when it comes to seeing Overwatch characters in Smash.

With Overwatch on its way to the Nintendo Switch this month, it seems there was no better time for the rumor mill to start conjuring up dreams of characters like Tracer or Winston in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Most developers know to keep quiet in this scenario; sometimes it's better to say nothing at all than offer an definitive answer one way or the other. Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan, however, apparently never learned that lesson.

While speaking to IGN about a number of things, Kaplan was asked which Overwatch character he'd most like to see in Smash Bros. And in a move that had to surprise his interviewer, Kaplan essentially started campaigning for Nintendo to include one Overwatch character — ANY Overwatch characer — in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

"To the Smash Bros. team, whatever character you want, we love them all," Kaplan said. "They're all our babies, you can have any single one of them. We have 31 to choose from."

If it were up to Kaplan, though, and there could only be one Overwatch character added to Smash, he knows which character he'd choose.

"Tracer's our girl," he said. "Tracer's our mascot. She'd be my first choice."

A few months back — back when Overwatch wasn't getting a Switch port and Smash was only getting one DLC pass — this dream might have sounded impossible. Now, though? It actually seems like a fairly feasible thing. Overwatch characters actually appearing on Switch could bolster their chances of being added. And now that the Smash team is committing to adding even more DLC characters, there's plenty of room for someone like Tracer to join the roster.
