Wrath: Aeon Of Ruin Comes To Steam Early Access In Surprise Launch

3D Realms has surprise-launched Wrath: Aeon of Ruin, a shooter built on the game engine from id Software's Quake.

First revealed back in March, Wrath missed its targeted summer release window. Beyond a brief showing at Gamescom, the developers had shared little about the anticipated title. Now, a version containing the first of three hub worlds, two levels, five weapons, eight enemies, and four artifacts has come to Steam Early Access.

"Once adrift upon the Ageless Sea, Outlander finds himself on the shores of a dying world," reads the official description. "A radiant figure draped in white, the Shepherd of Wayward Souls, burdens Outlander with a harrowing task: journey into the sprawling gloom and slay the fallen Guardians who have plunged this world into darkness."

According to today's announcements, developer KillPixel plans to add more levels and content leading up to Wrath's full launch in early 2020. You can purchase the Early Access version of the dark fantasy horror FPS on Steam for $23.74 through Dec. 3, 5% off the normal asking price. You also have the option to buy a bundle containing Wrath: Aeon of Ruin and Voidpoint's controversial Ion Fury for $43.86, a 12% discount.

"There's still a long way to go—the development roadmap lays out plans for three content updates prior to full release next year—but I've put a couple of hours into it, and even in its pre-release state it is very good," wrote PC Gamer's Andy Chalk. "Wrath is obviously nowhere near ready for a final verdict, but I feel like it would take an active effort to screw it up."

Wrath: Aeon of Ruin comes to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch early next year. If you're thinking about buying into Early Access, check out the tentative content roadmap here.
