Resident Evil 3 Remake Drops In April 2020, Includes Resistance

Sony finally surprised us with a State of Play stream. Not with the Resident Evil 3 Remake announcement, mind you — we knew that had a shot at coming. The surprise came in the form of the release date — April 3, 2020 — and what else players will be getting when Resident Evil 3 Remake arrives next year.

Resident Evil 3 Remake will come bundled with Project Resistance, which is now simply called Resident Evil Resistance.

We have to say: Sony set this up quite beautifully. As the State of Play presentation displayed a Project Resistance graphic, the host casually mentioned that Sony wanted to share exclusive footage from the game's campaign mode. A campaign mode? Wasn't this supposed to be an asymmetric multiplayer game?

At the start, the campaign trailer played from a first-person perspective, placing viewers inside the head of a woman trying to elude the massive figure stalking her. It soon became obvious, however, that the woman was Jill Valentine. The hulking monstrosity coming after her? That was Nemesis. And just like that, all the pieces fell into place. We knew we were looking at Resident Evil 3 Remake, and we knew — based on the way the "campaign" was teased — that RE3 Remake and Resistance were part of the same overall experience.

This move actually makes a lot of sense. We're sure Resident Evil 3 Remake would've sold gangbusters on its own, just like the remake of RE2. But these are single-player titles in a world where every game is trying add some sort of live-service component. Had Capcom released Resident Evil Resistance on its own, it risked alienating those dying to play another traditional Resident Evil game. But had Capcom also released Resident Evil 3 Remake by itself, it would've missed an opportunity to keep people playing months or years into the future.

Including both titles in the same package checks off both boxes. It satiates the hardcore Resident Evil fans with a single-player campaign while also including a multiplayer option. This right here? This is how you do it.

We'll undoubtedly be getting more news on both Resident Evil 3 Remake and Resident Evil Resistance in the months ahead of its release. Stay tuned.
