Resident Evil's Martin Sandwich Is A Joke Capcom Won't Let Die

Move over Jill Valentine, there's a new oddly-named character ready to bask in the Resident Evil spotlight. In a tweet yesterday, Capcom introduced Martin Sandwich to the world. Yes, that is seriously his name. This "skilled engineer and mechanic" will be one of the playable Survivor characters in the 4v1 asymmetrical multiplayer game Resistance, which is included in the upcoming Resident Evil 3 Remake.

Martin Sandwich will apparently use his tinkering skills to create traps that can slow down and even stun enemies. But it seems fans are less concerned with what Martin can do, and are instead fascinated with his bizarre name. Sandwich? Seriously? It turns out this strange surname is likely a reference to a much-parodied scene in the OG Resident Evil.

After almost being crushed during the game — and exclaiming "Oh, Barry!" for some reason — Jill is rewarded with this classic line from Barry Burton: "That was too close. You were almost a Jill Sandwich."

This isn't the first time Capcom has called back to this now-famous scene. There's a "Jill's Sandwiches" shop in the mall of Dead Rising. That one is a little more on the nose.

In response to Martin Sandwich's unveiling, the internet had a field day making fun of him. There's nothing funny about his looks or his abilities, mind you; it is purely his name that has people questioning Capcom's sanity. And already there are edits of a sandwich replacing Martin's head. Capcom had to see this coming, right? You can't give someone a name like "Sandwich" and expect people to leave it alone. You just can't.

Both Resident Evil 3 Remake and Resident Evil Resistance – which are part of the same experience – release April 3, 2020. We'll be ready and waiting for more Martin Sandwich memes when that day comes.
