Epic's Last Free Game Has Players Speculating
With Hello Neighbor being announced as today's Epic Games Store freebie, it's widely presumed that Epic only has one more game left before its year-long game giveaway bonanza comes to an end. As usual, we got a teaser logo. Now players are trying to crack the code.
Some feel they've already solved the mystery. The "Y" in the image above, they say, looks to be pulled from the Yooka-Laylee logo. When comparing the two, we feel compelled to agree. That's a very distinct Y, and seeing as Playtonic is an indie developer — and indies have made up the vast majority of the games given away by Epic – Yooka-Laylee going free would make a lot of sense.
There's just one catch, however — there are now two Yooka-Laylee games, thanks to the release of Impossible Lair this year.
So which could it be? It depends on how big of a bang Epic wants to go out with. The original Yooka-Laylee has been out for quite a while now, and has either been given away or offered up on various platforms and subscription services already. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, however, is but a few months old. The former would likely be easier to give away. The latter would offer the most value of the two and would grab more headlines.
As far as we know, Epic's string of giveaways ends entirely on Jan. 1. That doesn't just mean the "12 days of Christmas" titles go away; it means (based on word from Epic last year) that all the freebies come to an end. It's possible Epic could surprise us and say the weekly games are still coming, as it surprised us before by upping the one game per two weeks to one game per week. But if the start of the new year marks the finish of Epic's promotion, we wouldn't be totally shocked to see Impossible Lair offered up as the company's last hurrah.
We'll find out tomorrow.
