Doki Doki Literature Club Is Getting New Content Soon

Team Salvato's Doki Doki Literature Club was a surprise critical hit upon its release in 2017. The game took the tropes familiar to fans of visual novels and turned them on their head by introducing fourth wall-breaking horror elements that played with gamers' perceptions of how these types of stories are supposed to traditionally work. The game also featured multiple endings, many of which didn't seem to leave much wiggle room for a continuation of the story.

It was a pleasant surprise, then, when Team Salvato founder Dan Salvato announced on Twitter that his plans for the year included "releasing new DDLC content (not a sequel)." Considering how many of the endings played out for the original game, it's not surprising that the new content wouldn't be a sequel. This begs the question: what exactly does Salvato have up his sleeve?

Considering the original game's multiple branching paths allowed you to receive different story outcomes — and those outcomes were based around the actions of the titular club's members — it wouldn't be out of the question for the game to receive new characters as part of this expansion. A similar tactic was taken by Atlus with its release of Catherine: Full Body, which remastered the original game and added an entirely new romantic interest for the protagonist to pursue. If nothing else, it has been proven that fans will seize on the chance to revisit a story from a new perspective, which could be close to what Salvato has planned.

Still, given the unconventional nature of Doki Doki Literature Club, we may be right to expect something much more complex than simply the addition of new characters. Whatever the case, it's good to know that Salvato is back in the business of making games. In addition to this new content, he has also stated plans to finish another long-gestating visual novel, which should have fans of his team's previous work very excited.
