The New Final Fantasy 7 Remake Character Explained

Though a remake, the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 will come with new material and Materia. Square Enix has divided the original story into three, fully-fledged AAA titles, so it's no surprise the developers have come up with a fresh character or two to populate the sprawling, pseudo open-world you'll get to enjoy when the game releases on Apr. 10. It's kind of a big deal, and so is Chadley, one of the first new characters revealed by the Final Fantasy 7 Remake team.

Chadley is a baby-faced 15-year-old who — despite his age — works as a trainee in the Science Division of Shinra Electric Power Company. Seriously, this kid is a short little dude who wears suspenders for his socks. Maybe he got the job because he's something of a genius: Chadley researches and develops new types of Materia. Materia is what makes magic happen, so collecting it is an important part of the game if you want to summon or cast spells.

What's really interesting is that Chadley is developing new Materia with a little help from Cloud and the gang. This will surely shake things up as compared to the original 1997 title. Chadley asks Cloud to carry out a new type of side quest to obtain the means to make this Materia.

Mercenary quests, according to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Twitter, vary as you progress through the game. This news made some prospective players roll their eyes: pointless fetch quests? No thanks. Others have pointed out these side quests often help to expand the lore of the world and contribute greatly to the overall story. These are the folks ready to get to know Chadley and his revolutionary research.

Side quests have always been a part of the Final Fantasy formula, but Chadley is brand new. It will be interesting to see how he contributes to the research at Shinra, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake in general.
