Marvel's Blade Game Reportedly Faces Cancellation Amid Xbox Studio Layoffs

Believe it or not, there was a time when superhero games were awful. "Superman 64" is widely regarded as one of the worst video games of all time, and it's hardly an outlier. For decades developers struggled to make compelling games about comic book heroes before turning a corner. Games like "Spider-Man" on the PlayStation 4 and even "Marvel's Avengers" ushered in a golden era of high quality superhero titles, and opened the door for some lesser known heroes to get a game of their own.

Marvel's daywalking vampire Blade is a character that fans have obsessed over for years. Blade showed up in his own movie trilogy starring Wesley Snipes, and his version even brushed up against the Marvel Cinematic Universe in "Deadpool & Wolverine." Blade fans were beyond thrilled near the end of 2023 when Bethesda and its parent company Xbox announced that the vampire hunter would be getting his own game. The "Blade" game is being developed by Arkane Studios, the company behind "Deathloop," "Redfall," and the modern "Wolfenstein" games.

"Redfall" was different from other Arkane games, and before the "Redfall" disaster, the studio's reputation was solid gold. After "Redfall" flopped, even Arkane's fans started getting nervous about the company's big Marvel collaboration. Now Arkane's backers might be getting nervous because new reporting suggests that Xbox might cancel "Blade" entirely.

Xbox layoffs could jeopardize Blade

It's no secret that the past few years have been extremely difficult for game developers. Across the industry, developers have experienced waves of studio closures and layoffs that are nothing short of devastating. These aren't just affecting small studios. Recently Bungie, a massive and beloved game developer, had its staff cut by parent company Sony after unceremoniously ending development on its long-lived, free-to-play multiplayer game "Destiny 2."

Of course, it's not just Sony and PlayStation facing tough times. A report from The Verge suggests that Xbox is currently weighing its options and preparing to announce a stark series of layoffs and potential studio closures. An official announcement from Xbox could come as soon as the first week of July, and expectant "Blade" fans had better be crossing their fingers until then.

The game is reportedly over budget, and the devs have already pushed back its earliest possible release date to late 2027. Xbox is apparently considering cancelling the game or possibly selling off Arkane Studios as part of its next move. Even if Xbox successfully sells Arkane to another company, that won't necessarily guarantee "Blade" sees the light of day.

Is the Blade franchise cursed?

Sadly, it's a rough time for Blade in multiple mediums. The character is still kicking in the Marvel Comics universe, but the company's attempts at a new "Blade" adaptation don't seem to be going anywhere. The future of the "Blade" game from Arkane Studios has never been less certain, and the MCU's attempt at a "Blade" movie is also in dire straits.

Marvel has been working on a "Blade" movie for years, and fans can't quite figure out what's going wrong. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed the project all the way back in 2019, when Mahershala Ali first signed on to play the titular character. Since then the "Blade" movie has been stuck in development hell.

In 2022, the film lost its director Bassam Tariq, and in 2024, Tariq's replacement Yann Demange also called it quits. Marvel quietly pulled "Blade" from its 2025 lineup, and the movie currently has no planned release date. Fans thought they'd be playing the "Blade" video game shortly before seeing the MCU movie, but now it looks as though they might never experience either project. At least Marvel's "Wolverine," one of the most anticipated games of 2026, is still very much on the table.
