PlayStation Officially Begins The End Of The PS3 And PS Vita Era

When it was announced that the physical edition of "Grand Theft Auto 6" won't include a disc (not even the pricier $100 Ultimate Edition), gamers were understandably frustrated. There was a sense that it was just another nail in the coffin of physical video game media, taking us one step closer to a 100% digital future. And with what Sony announced on July 1, 2026 in regards to a pretty significant piece of its current library of digital games, we are once again reminded of one of the biggest reasons why game releases going entirely digital should be highly concerning for all gamers.

In an announcement posted on the official PlayStation blog, Sony revealed that it will soon begin gradually shutting down the digital marketplaces for both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita. The only clearly defined reason that Sony cited for the decision was the difficulty in continuing to keep updating the aging stores so they can support evolving payment methods. But it's hard not to be cynical and assume that greedier reasons are behind the decision, chief among them being able to force gamers to repurchase the games again on the PlayStation 5 digital storefront, which often comes with a price mark-up.

The PS3 and Vita digital stores will be closed across the world by Summer 2027

According to the blog post, the first wave of closures will hit Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua in August 2026. All other Latin American countries, in addition to Middle Eastern countries, will see their PS3 and Vita stores begin going dark toward the end of 2026. And finally, July 2027 has been set as the end date for the storefronts for the rest of the world. Sony is promising to allow players to continue redownloading purchased content after the final closure date "for the foreseeable future," but how long that will last is anyone's guess.

There are several reasons why this news is heartbreaking, chief among them the death of any games that are 100% exclusive to either of those storefronts. As we've seen with previous digital store closures, such as the 2019 shuttering of the Wii Shop Channel, many digital-only games have become completely lost media and have yet to see any sort of official re-release. There is also the fact that PS3 emulation on PS5 is still limited to cloud streaming only, meaning the only way to play PS3 games natively is on an actual PS3. That makes the preservation potential of games that are locked to the PS3 incredibly troubling. Be prepared for the remaining physical copies of PS3 and Vita games to become extremely pricey in the second hand market once this process is completed.
