GTA 6: Everything We Know About Jason Duval (So Far)

"Grand Theft Auto VI" might scale slightly back from "GTA 5" when it comes to the head count of its playable protagonists, but two should be plenty if their chemistries align as well as Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos'. In the Netflix "GTA 6" extended look, we finally got a lengthy glimpse at the duo in action, as well as some insight into their actual personalities. 

According to information released by Rockstar Games, Jason is a small-time crook who took a stint in the military when he was younger to blow off some energy. Now, he's back to his old habits in Leonida, pulling off small-scale stuff but considering a move into bigger leagues in order to attain access to a better life. Despite his tiny fish mindset up to now, he's no fool: He seems to realize that his relationship with Lucia and the high-stakes life of crime they embark on has the potential to turn out either extremely well or really badly. 

In the extended look, Jason gets the bulk of the attention when it comes to pure gun-toting action, moving confidently from space to space even if they're filled with enemies. Near the end, he pulls a very "Die Hard"-style stunt against some villains invading a building, which further highlights the kind of action-hero status that comes with his dual experiences of military service and working for drug smugglers. His personality is somewhat less defined, so it's hard to say precisely what kind of man he turns out to be — but Rockstar hasn't dealt with truly bland protagonists since Claude from "Grand Theft Auto III," so it's safe to assume that Jason comes with plenty of layers. 

As it stands, Jason is largely defined by his relationships. The extended look shows him interacting with several far more colorful personalities who frankly overshadow him, such as Brian Heder and Raul Bautista. Most importantly, though, everything we know of Lucia Caminos so far suggests that she's the protagonist with the personality — and the pair's interactions do suggest that she's the more interesting one of the duo. 

Just like the "GTA V" protagonist trio balances larger-than-life personalities Trevor Philips and Michael De Santa out with the more muted and grounded Franklin Clinton, it's potentially possible that Jason is deliberately molded into a fairly cookie-cutter video game protagonist to give Lucia — the first playable female protagonist of the "GTA" 3D era — the frankly much-deserved opportunity to be the more vibrant character. Granted, Jason could surprise us all in the game itself, especially since the massive game length of "GTA 6" will give him ample opportunities to show what he's all about. But right now, he comes across as a fairly generic guy whose fate may be to act as the straight man to Lucia, a feistier and more interesting figure.
