GTA 6's Extended Look Has Fans Making The Same Complaint About Jason
Rockstar just lifted the lid on "Grand Theft Auto 6" via the Netflix "Extended Look" special, providing a demonstration of everything from the game's gunplay to its mini-games. For the most part, fans seem to be seriously impressed. Viewers all seemed to be asking the same thing after the "GTA 6" "Extended Look:" How is this game running on a base model PlayStation 5? But that wasn't the only big topic of conversation in the wake of the Netflix special.
For many, it seems the voice acting for protagonist Jason Duval is less than impressive. Over on Reddit, users are describing Jason's voice as "very weird sounding" and "overly deep." There's a fair few fans who seem to feel the same way. "Jason's voice actor is so bad," writes another Redditor. "He sounds like a completely untrained VA reading off lines for the first time in one recording session." Another adds, "Jason's voice is kinda bugging me. He sounds like he's mumbling and 60 years old."
There was never going to be any shortage of complaints on Reddit, but it seems these notoriously hard to please connoisseurs of culture aren't the only ones who have a problem with Jason. Plenty of users on X (formerly Twitter) seem similarly bothered by the character's voice, with one even dubbing it "some of the worst s*** I've heard in a while from any Rockstar game." Is this just a case of people looking for something to complain about? After all, the "Extended Look" special seemed to go over extremely well otherwise, and almost has people forgetting their fury over the "GTA 6" physical edition shipping without a disc. That said, Jason's voice has irked the base, who maintain the voice acting simply isn't up to par.
GTA fans are not impressed by Jason Duval's voice
Rockstar Games is yet to confirm the "GTA 6," voice cast so we don't actually know who provided the voice for Jason Duval. What we do know about Jason is that he's a former soldier turned small-time crook who will try to work his way, alongside his partner Lucia Caminos, towards becoming a Vice City big shot. Unfortunately, it seems he'll be irritating a large portion of the fandom on his road to the top.
The complaints about Jason's voice are fairly widespread. One X user writes, "Is it me or Jason's acting in GTA 6 is just terrible?" Another opines, "The voice actor for Jason in 'GTA 6' is terrible. He sounds like a giant," which we presume is another knock against the supposedly "overly deep" pitch of his voice. The users who replied to that particular comment certainly seem to be in agreement, with one describing the voice acting as "painful."
But it's not just the character's pitch that seems to have caused a mini backlash. As X user pirate_atomsk put it, "Not a fan of Jason's voice. Sounds like he's got his mouth wired shut or something." A reply concurs: "Thank you!! Super garbled/mumbly delivery and I cannot stand it." Others described Jason's voice as like someone "talking with a mouthful of peanut butter," with some even going as far as to say his voice makes him sound dim. "Jason's voice sounds horrible though. It's really bugging me," writes user SilverIntoSteel. "Hopefully it's a story thing that he's slow and awkward or something." Clearly, then, there's a shared sentiment among many fans.
GTA 6's Jason Duval has bigger problems than his voice
While Jason Duval's voice has apparently stoked the ire of a significant number of "GTA" fans, that's arguably not the biggest issue with the character. The most glaring problem here is that Jason seems like the result of a "Computer, generate generic white dude" prompt.
Previous "GTA" protagonists have given players the chance to inhabit characters designed with some sort of iconic screen presence in mind. Tommy Vercetti from 2002's "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City," for example, was Rockstar's take on a Tony Montana-type (and in that case we got a legendary voice performance from the late, great Ray Liotta). Carl "CJ" Johnson of "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," meanwhile, seemed to be an amalgamation of every 90s West Coast rapper/"Boyz n the Hood" character. By comparison, Jason Duval seems like a base level create-a-character model. Indeed, as one X user put it, "Dude has no personality."
Regardless, "GTA 6" already looks much more realistic and more fully realized than "GTA 5," and fans have almost unanimously been won over by the game's graphics and level of detail. Whether Jason's voice becomes more of an issue as the rollout continues remains to be seen, but it does seem like a fairly minor problem overall. That said, once we get the game and have to spend significant time with these characters, it might start to become a louder one.
