According to a new report, "Grand Theft Auto 6" is set to launch on PC sometime during the first three months of 2027. The report comes exclusively from GamesBeat, who was able to talk to four anonymous sources and who each corroborated the same timeline. While there is no official release date for "GTA 6" on PC, Q1 of 2027 would be a much shorter launch window than many players were expecting.

If the report is accurate, then this means PC players could only have to wait two or three months before "GTA 6" comes to Windows. This is a stark change in direction for the franchise, as developer Rockstar Games waited two years to port "GTA 5" to PC over a decade ago. Whatever the reason may be, the entire "GTA 6" community may get to play together by March 2027 at the latest — if the new report is on the mark.

Some players already had an inkling that Rockstar Games was leaning towards an earlier PC release date than in years past, thanks to comments from Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick. On a recent shareholder's call, Zelnick stated that "the PC is becoming more and more important to our company over time." The head of Take-Two wasn't speaking directly about "GTA 6" with these comments, but it was an interesting statement to make, given how much guesswork has been done about the game's launch on PC. While the "Grand Theft Auto" player base is predominantly on PlayStation and Xbox, the PC community has been growing in recent years, especially with all of the new role-playing servers that have popped up for "GTA Online."

GTA 6's PC port could tie into the release of GTA Online

It hasn't yet been confirmed why Rockstar Games is potentially waiting for Q1 2027 for the PC release of "GTA 6." The timing is interesting, though, given another bit of information that originated from Twitch's CEO, Dan Clancy, a few weeks ago. According to Clancy, he believes that the "GTA Online" multiplayer mode will be released for "GTA 6" sometime in 2027. While this was generally expected, it does provide Rockstar Games with an opportunity to sync the PC and "GTA Online" launches with one another.

Of course, Rockstar could launch its next iteration of "GTA Online" before the PC port to ensure all of the bugs are worked out before a new batch of players flood the servers. This timeline seems slightly more likely, given Strauss Zelnick's comments regarding why Rockstar titles come out on consoles before PC.

Earlier this year, Zelnick talked to Bloomberg and said that Rockstar "always starts on console because I think [...] that you're judged by serving the core. Like really serving the core consumer. If your core consumer isn't there, if they're not served first and best, you kind of don't hit your other consumers."

However, it's also been implied that Rockstar waits to release its games on PC to keep players on the base experience at launch, reining in modders. The developers also likely want to ensure a game's core optimization is in place before having to worry about any issues a new platform introduces. Whatever the reasons may be, though, it appears Rockstar is confident that it can deliver a solid PC experience for "GTA 6," if the reported Q1 2027 timeline holds up.
