GTA 6 Online: Everything Rockstar Said—and Didn't Say—About Multiplayer
Up to this point, Rockstar has explicitly stated that it is only focusing on a single-player experience for "Grand Theft Auto 6." While that is good news for anyone who considers the story their favorite part of a "GTA" game, the absolutely monumental popularity of "Grand Theft Auto Online" suggests that plenty of gamers also like to share their "GTA" experience with other players. "GTA Online" has certainly gone a long way in extending the life of "Grand Theft Auto 5," not to mention raked in an unfathomable amount of cash for Rockstar.
So now that we've gotten our first (official) significant look at "Grand Theft Auto 6," gameplay and all, did Rockstar have any surprises for us in terms of revealing either the new iteration of "GTA Online" or some other form of multiplayer for "GTA 6"? As of now, that answer is a resounding "nope." Everything that was shown in today's big reveal was strictly single player gameplay, with absolutely nothing that even teases multiplayer action.
Lucia and Jason co-op looks to be handled entirely by swapping characters
The confirmation of two leads for "GTA 6" had people hoping for some multiplayer co-op wherein one person controls Jason and the other controls Lucia. Of course, having three protagonists for "GTA 5" certainly didn't mean co-op for that game — but dropping the main cast down to two for "GTA 6" had some players hopeful that that decision was made specifically to allow for co-op.
Unfortunately, the only "co-op" offered up in the gameplay showcase involved the player swapping between Jason and Lucia as the story progressed. As cool as it would be to have one person as Jason and the other playing as Lucia at the same time, that doesn't seem to be in the cards — at least not based on what has been shown in the Netflix exclusive video. As for the future of "GTA Online" and the seemingly inevitable next version that will move the action to Leonidas, none of that was shown or discussed in the Netflix showcase, either. For the time being, it's something that we all assume is coming, but we still haven't been officially told or shown anything by Rockstar.
