Can You Play GTA 6 Without An Internet Connection?

Remember when you just turned on your game console and played without having to connect to the internet? It seems like a distant memory today. Thankfully, while online play has become the norm, we're not quite at the stage where games can only be played with an internet connection (though we're not far off). Now, after multiple delays, "Grand Theft Auto 6" is almost upon us, and fans will be elated to learn that they'll almost certainly be able to play offline.

A Redditor noted how the "Grand Theft Auto 6" PlayStation Store page lists "Offline play enabled" as one of the features. Indeed, if you head over to the PlayStation Store via a web browser, you'll see that very certification in the details of the listing, as well as notation reading "'Grand Theft Auto VI' is a single-player experience." You'll also see the same "Offline play enabled" certification on the main "GTA 6" page on PlayStation.com.

PlayStation has a one-time online check for verification, after which players don't have to reconnect to the internet periodically to re-authenticate their purchase. That means players can download "GTA 6," verify their purchase one time, and be able to play "GTA 6" offline without having to connect to the internet. This might seem like a fairly small development, but with Rockstar failing to offer a physical, disc-based version, thereby preventing players from trading or selling their copy, many were surely expecting an always-on internet connection requirement as to keep further tabs on players.

Is Rockstar Games actually cutting players some slack with GTA 6's online requirements?

At this point, Rockstar Games hasn't officially confirmed whether players need to be online to play "GTA 6." But the wording on the PlayStation Store is fairly clear. Of course, players will need to connect to the internet to download the game. But Rockstar has yet to clarify whether they'll be required to re-authenticate their purchase by reconnecting periodically. For now, that doesn't appear to be the case.

Interestingly enough, as noted by TweakTown, the console version of the PlayStation Store uses the phrase "Offline play only," suggesting Rockstar Games plans to release "GTA 6" and "GTA Online" as entirely separate products. We know "GTA 6" is a single-player experience, but Rockstar is yet to confirm how it plans to work "GTA Online" into the game. If "GTA 6" is offline play only, that suggests Rockstar is developing "GTA Online" as an entirely separate product — no doubt in an attempt to wring more profit out of this historic release. For now, it remains an open question.

Given how needlessly complex, and frankly cynical, much of the "GTA 6" release has been thus far (the "GTA 6" physical edition doesn't have a disc and the so-called "Standard Edition" is missing locations and story elements) you'd expect Rockstar to require an internet connection to play the latest "GTA" installment. For now, however, this is one area where the developer is cutting players some slack.
