GTA 6: Everything You Need To Know

It's a good time to be a gamer. There are some exciting games releasing in 2026, and then there's one behemoth that's likely to overshadow them all. After 13 years, Rockstar is finally launching "Grand Theft Auto 6," and gamers think their lives will never be the same.

Some people are already planning what new console to buy for "GTA 6," which will debut on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in November. Other fans are dreaming up ways that "GTA 6" could make gamers into millionaires, and they're enthusiastically planning their rise to the top. The enthusiasm in the gaming community is palpable.

Everyone thinks that "GTA 6" is going to revolutionize gaming, and they just might be right. Rockstar has a reputation for raising the bar with every new release, and based on everything we know about "GTA 6," the next installment is going to be the legendary company's crowning achievement.

When will GTA 6 be released?

After 13 years of waiting, gamers can't believe that they're finally about to play "Grand Theft Auto 6" in a matter of months. "GTA 6" will officially launch on November 19, 2026, a day that will undoubtedly see a surge of people taking sick days from work. Pre-orders for "GTA 6" opened on June 25, so you can buy a copy right now.

What's great is that anyone who pre-ordered the game will be able to start downloading and installing "GTA 6" on their PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S on November 12, a week before the official release date. That allows everyone to start the game on release date, even if their internet connection turns downloading the game into a multi-day procedure.

There's been some controversy surrounding the physical release of the game — there won't be one. At least, not in the traditional sense. It seems that those wanting to buy a copy of the game to keep on their shelf at home won't get a disc. Instead, the box will contain a download code. This move has led to some retailers refusing to stock "GTA 6."

How much does GTA 6 cost?

The entire gaming community spent years preparing itself for "GTA 6" to raise the price of games across the industry. Rumors claiming the game would cost $100 were widespread, and though they turned out not to be true, they also weren't far off. In June 2026 fans learned that the standard edition of "GTA 6" costs $80. That's $10 more than typical AAA games, but gamers are all but certain that the game will be worth every penny.

There's another side to the "GTA 6" pricing story that fans aren't quite as happy about. The game has an Ultimate Edition that retails for $100 and includes in-game content that some fans think should be in the base game. In addition to in-game cosmetics for protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, the Ultimate Edition gives players access to unique in-game locations, and some fans think it's unreasonable to lock even tiny portions of the "GTA 6" map behind a paywall.

How realistic will GTA 6 be?

Rockstar is a famously tight-lipped developer, but the company took secrecy to a whole new level with its work on "GTA 6." Everything about the game was kept so under wraps that fans hadn't even seen any gameplay footage by the time Rockstar started taking pre-orders for the game. Despite Rockstar's best efforts, some info managed to leak over the years, and every bit of gameplay info points toward "GTA 6" being more realistic than anyone expected.

One leak from an alleged former Rockstar employee claimed that "GTA 6" will have dialogue trees unlike anything gamers have ever seen. Voice actors supposedly recorded multiple versions of all their lines, allowing for characters to have dynamic reactions to what players do in the game. Background NPCs also have more extensive voice lines than ever before, and all that dialogue will be backed up by incredibly lifelike NPC behavior. Leaks indicate that "GTA 6" will massively expand on the greet/antagonize system from "Red Dead Redemption 2," allowing players to interact with the world in ways that no game has ever allowed before.

All those hyper-advanced NPCs will be populating the largest map Rockstar has ever made. Fans have speculated that "GTA 6" will be more than three times larger than "GTA 5," and leaks have indicated that "GTA 6" will have more fully explorable buildings than any game Rockstar has made in the past. All in all, "GTA 6" will offer gamers a world so lifelike and detailed they'll truly be able to lose themselves in it.

What do we know about the story of GTA 6?

As fans might expect, Rockstar has kept details of the "GTA 6" story under wraps as much as possible, though character bios on the company's website have allowed fans to get a basic grasp of how the story will pan out. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are the dual protagonists of the game, which kicks off with Lucia finishing a stretch behind bars. When Lucia was locked up Jason was making ends meet by doing odd jobs for Brian Heder, described as "a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys" who is "still moving product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori." Brian will seemingly be the primary mission giver during the early stages of the game.

It appears as though Jason and Lucia will take things up a notch in terms of their criminal activities when they meet Raul Batista, who is described as "a seasoned bank robber always on the hunt for talent ready to take the risks that bring the biggest rewards." The Rockstar website makes it clear that Raul is reckless, so Jason and Lucia's dealings with him will no doubt lead to some complications. Another major character who will apparently become a mission giver is Dre'Quan Priest, a dealer turned music producer who has just signed a hot new act called Real Dimez. While the identities of the voice actors are yet to be confirmed, here's what the rumored cast of "GTA 6" looks like.

Will there be a GTA 6 Online?

If there's one thing that gamers are more excited for than "GTA 6," it's the next version of "GTA Online." Rockstar blew everyone away when it transformed "GTA 5" into a multiplayer experience, and since then "GTA Online" has become the company's biggest cash cow. We don't know exactly how much money "GTA Online" has generated since it launched, but estimates suggest it's more than $5 billion.

Because of that, gamers were pretty surprised when Rockstar firmly stated that "GTA 6" would launch as a single-player only experience. The developer hasn't announced any official plans for a new version of "GTA Online," but virtually everyone assumes that the devs are hard at work on it. Players may be exploring "GTA 6" on their own for a while, but just like "Red Dead Online" and the original "GTA Online," a new multiplayer experience will likely come out down the line.
