It's no secret that "Grand Theft Auto 6" is one of the most preordered video games in history, if not the current apex. Rockstar Games has already reported that preorder sales have exceeded $600 million, and most of those sales are for the $100 Ultimate Edition of "GTA 6" instead of the $80 Standard Edition. However, if you're rethinking your purchase before the game is released on Nov. 19, you might be wondering what happens if you decide to cancel your preorder.

Whether it was a disappointing aspect of the Extended Showcase on Netflix or perhaps something in one of the recent trailers, you are fully entitled to cancel your "GTA 6" preorder. There are some stipulations and restrictions that come with getting a refund for your purchase, though, so you'll need to know about those before you can attempt to get your money back. Below, you can see if you qualify to cancel your preorder for "GTA 6" and what happens if you decide you want to back out.

What goes into canceling your preorder for GTA 6?

First and foremost, Rockstar Games has confirmed that players can cancel their "GTA 6" preorder and receive a full refund for the amount they've spent on their chosen edition. However, there are some caveats to canceling, and it also depends on whether you preordered a physical or digital edition of the game. It also matters whether you preordered from Rockstar Games or a major retailer, like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, etc.

Let's first cover how to cancel a digital preorder, as those are likely going to be more common than physical preorders, since physical editions don't actually contain a disc for "GTA 6." Luckily, the process works virtually the same regardless of what platform you're on. There are some differences depending on whether you're using PlayStation or Xbox.

On PlayStation, you can cancel your preorder and receive a full refund that's credited back to the payment method you used when purchasing "GTA 6." However, in order to receive your refund, you need to cancel before the download files for "GTA 6" are ready for pre-load. As of now, the pre-load date for "GTA 6" is set for Nov. 12, 2026, meaning you have until then to cancel your preorder. If you wait until the files are pre-loaded, this usually means your refund window has closed. You can contact PlayStation Support to see if a cancellation can still be done.

As for Xbox, your payment method typically won't be charged until roughly 10 days before a game's launch; in this case, on Nov. 9. If you cancel your preorder before Nov. 9, there's no refund, as you simply keep your money. Also, Xbox is more lenient than PlayStation when it comes to canceling preorders. As long as you haven't played "GTA 6" early, you can usually still cancel a preorder before an official release, and receive a full refund if you've been charged. You'll ideally want to cancel your preorder before the Nov 12. pre-load date, though, as refunds become less likely after "GTA 6" is installed on your console.

What happens if you try to cancel a physical preorder?

If you've decided to buy a physical edition of "GTA 6," then you'll either have to revisit whatever retailer you preordered from or go through Rockstar directly. Every retailer works differently when it comes to canceling a preorder, so it's difficult to say what happens when you try to cancel through a storefront like Amazon or Walmart.

On the other hand, if you preordered from Rockstar, you can follow the steps outlined on Xsolla, which is the site where all physical preorders for "GTA 6" are handled. To quickly sum up, though, you can cancel a physical preorder prior to its shipping date. Rockstar has stated that physical editions should arrive around Nov. 12, which, again, is when the pre-load for the game will begin, so you'll need to cancel a preorder near the start of November to be sure you get your request in before the edition is shipped.

Finally, aside from getting a refund for "GTA 6," canceling a preorder for the game also means that you lose any added bonuses in "GTA Online." Specifically, preordering the game earns you a free month of the GTA+ membership, and if you haven't claimed that bonus, then it will become unavailable after you cancel your preorder.
