Xbox Live Free Games With Gold For September 2020

Summer might be coming to a close, but the Xbox action is just heating up. Even as the launch of the Xbox Series X (and possibly the Xbox Series S) creeps closer, Microsoft is not abandoning the Xbox One anytime soon. With a new month comes a new lineup of free Games with Gold.

During August, Xbox Live Gold and Games Pass subscribers received free copies of Portal Knights, Override: Mech City Brawl, MX Unleashed, and Red Faction 2. You have until the end of August to claim Portal Knights and Red Faction 2, while Override will stay up for grabs until Sept. 15. Once the majority of August's free games are gone, you also can use your subscription to obtain new games, completely free of charge (minus the subscription fee). If you want to know what titles you can look forward to, read on for all your September free Games With Gold needs.

Tom Clancy's The Division

In 2016, Ubisoft published a game that featured a slightly more catastrophic take on a pandemic where New York City fell to ruin. It was up to you (and the rest of the playerbase) to take it back.

Tom Clancy's The Division combines tactical shooter combat with RPG mechanics and leveling. You need to free the city one bullet at a time, and since the game is an MMO, you can team up with your friends, total strangers, and everyone in between. Join other players to take out challenging enemy strongholds, or stab them in the back in PvPvE zones — all for the sake of powerful loot.

Since Tom Clancy's The Division is free with an Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass subscription, you can use its multiplayer functions without any additional charge. The game will be available from Sept. 1 through 30.

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2

Point-and-click adventures used to be everywhere, but they have fallen somewhat out of fashion. However, a few games keep the genre alive, and Microsoft is giving one away for Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass subscribers.

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 takes place in Avantasia, a magical land full of elves, trolls, and pop culture spoofs. The game is packed to the brim with puzzles, twists, and jokes that will keep players entertained for well over 20 hours. While The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is the sequel to The Book of Unwritten Tales, the first entry isn't available through the Games with Gold or Xbox Game Pass services. However, that shouldn't stop you from playing Unwritten Tales 2 since it will tease your brain as much as it will tickle your funny bone.

You can pick up The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 anytime between Sept. 16 and Oct. 15.

de Blob 2

Action platformers don't necessarily come to mind when you think about the Xbox line of consoles, but you're not out of luck if you want one on your Xbox One or 360. This September, Microsoft is giving away one of the most colorful platformers on the market in the most literal sense of the term.

De Blob 2 buts players in the amorphous body of the titular Blob as he globs, splats, and plops his way through a world overtaken by greyness. Blob must paint the town red, blue, green, and every other color of the rainbow, defeat massive bosses, and participate in hectic multiplayer action.

While you can only grab de Blob 2 between Sept. 1 and 15, you're not under any time crunch to play the game. Since it is an Xbox 360 title, the game is yours to keep, even after your Xbox Live Gold subscription lapses.

Armed and Dangerous

Almost every shooter these days tries to take a realistic approach towards gameplay and perspectives. A title either features weapons based on real-world guns, takes place from a first-person perspective, or both. That wasn't always the standard, and the Games with Gold program will remind you of just how crazy shooters could get when developers weren't concerned with realism.

Armed and Dangerous is an old school Xbox third-person shooter where players have to save the world without accidentally destroying it first. The game features one of the craziest arsenals to grace a console. Players can use assault rifles, sniper rifles, giant sharks that swim through rock, and black holes you can ship in a cardboard box.

Armed and Dangerous will be free from Sept. 16 through Sept. 30. As with de Blob 2, Armed and Dangerous is an older title, so you can download it onto your console and play it forever, even after your subscription expires.
